For Emigrants

Despite the many warnings to emigrants not to ship out from England but rather direct from German ports to America, there are still contracts made to travel from England through outside agents which are under contract with large local establishments. I will explain the differences between a direct German contract and an indirect contract made with an outside agent and traveling from England. Authorized German emigration-agents in Hamburg have to pay a fee of 10,000 Thaler banco, in Bremen 5,000 Thalers Gold and, by authority approved agents, have to pay a fee of up to 500 Thalers for the strict compliance of the rules set forth for the protection of the emigrant. The emigrants on German ships can talk to the captain and the sailors in the German language and the German ships sail, without any additional transfer costs, direct to their destination. It is completely different with the trip from England. All contracts completed in Germany are not valid in England; only the very inferior English passenger- contract is valid. In case of an accident the English law leaves it up to the captain of the ship to bring the passengers to their destination, or to reimburse the passage and drop them off. The emigrants and their luggage are transferred three times which will result in much damage, sometimes total loss of pieces and much loss of time. The significant amount more in cost by train from Hull to Liverpool and a long stopover in England have to be paid by the passenger, despite affirmations from the agent. To live together on English ships, often with very poor and unclean Irish people is also a big hardship and not very healthy. Besides the often unkind treatment the German emigrant will get often the worst food and sometimes not enough of it. When an outside agent, probably a Jew, here and in the vicinity travels around and offers the emigrant a passage from England to Texas for 48 Thalers per person, but with the costs in England and all other calamities included, the cost would easy come to 60 Thaler.

In April, 27 ships with 5,233 emigrants were transported direct from Hamburg; the indirect route from Hull to Liverpool transported 4,022 German emigrants. From a parliamentary document we can see that in the last six months eleven emigration-ships leaving English ports were shipwrecked and 755 people lost their lives. All the screaming not to go out of Liverpool did not seem to help any because since March nearly 10,000 Germans arrived there despite of the high prices.

I am authorized by my agent-general in Bremen to transport whole groups of emigrants direct from Bremen to Texas in August, sailing on the best ships without any other costs during the trip, for 50 Thalers gold for adults, and children 1-10 years of age for 45 Thalers gold, children under one year are free. Any other news will be given by me.
