Another Song of the Faithful, Praiseworthy Daughter
From Jahmen
Translated by Joel R. Meador

I stood high upon the mountain,
Looking down into the valley,
Where a small boat was passing through,
And three young men were sitting in it.

The most handsome and the youngest was,
The one who sat in the middle,
And who convinced me to marry him,
He was still so young.

He gave his small ring to me as a pledge,
His silver little ring,
“Here, take it, my Mägdelein, take it,
The silver little ring.”

“If your mother should ask you:
Who gave it to you?
You simply tell your mother:
I have found him.”

I cannot lie to my mother,
That is not going to occur to me at all,
I much prefer to say:
The young man wants to marry me.
