A. 090. What She Wanted

(From: Lohsa)
Translated by Ed Bernthal

A good youth hostel it is
Where there are young girls.
Enough girls there were
By a widow there.

The youngest cleans up the room
The mother plaits the middle ones hair
The oldest one looks out the window
For her sweetheart at the bar.

‘Don’t look out the window
Look for the little cabbages
Don’t look for the little cabbages
But for a little bandage.’

It was just in a little while
They carried her sweetheart away
All beat and banged up
All banged up and badly wounded.

It was just in a little while
They carried her sweetheart to the grave.
All the people cried very much
But his loved one cried much more.

The loved one in the casket said,
‘Be still, my girl, don’t cry!
There are enough youths for you,
More handsome and elegant than I.’

“I don’t care much about beauty
Also not for elegance any more.
I care only for your faithfulness
And for your love high and here.
