A. 275. What Is This?

Translated by Ed Benthal

What is this? I see a wagon
Coming after another one
Into the court yard at Neradis
What kind of a court yard service is this?

In the kitchen they are cooking
And the tables stand loaded
Everyone is running back and forth
Everyone is dressing themselves up.

Hannchen stands with the green garland
Like the birch trees in the spring time
Does she want to go as a bride
Or stay with her god father?

Hannchen wants to go to the wedding
Only asks whether she alone will confess
That a virtuous pastor
Took from her her young heart.

From over in Lower Lusatia
Where the Wends also maintain
Their church, he came for his beloved
And took Hannchen for his bride.

She pleased him right away
This one, he said, is above all others
Who as my companion
God has created for our life here.

And when she saw him
She had to silently realize
I want to choose him
To go through life with me.

And so it came by the way for her
To extend her hands to him
And the bond of love and faithfulness
Was established in that hour.

Today they renewed their vows
Of love and faithfulness
Themselves before the altar
Blissfully, sincerely.

So go then! The blessings of the Highest
Lead you always on happy ways
May happiness always be yours
And joy and bliss in your marriage.

Go united, full of sweet power
To bind wreaths of wedded love
May it be that a little girl will
Kiss you, or a little boy.
