A. 287. The Three Sisters

(From Krostwig)
Translated by Ed Bernthal

There were three sisters,
All three died on one day.
All three died on one day.

The first one died early in the morning,
The second one died at noon,
The third one died in the evening.

They went, yes the three souls,
Kept going always up to heaven.
Kept going always up to heaven.

They went a bit further,
When one of them started to look back.
When one of them started to look back.

‘Let’s go back home again;
Just listen how mother is crying over us!
Just listen how mother is crying over us!’

But the others said to her:
“We will never go home again,
Even if all the world were gold.”

They went, yes the three souls,
Kept going always up to heaven.
Kept going always up to heaven.

They went a bit further,
When one of them started to look back.
When one of them started to look back.

‘Let us go back home again;
Just listen how mother is crying over us!
Just listen how mother is crying over us!’

But the others said to her:
‘We will never go back home again,
Even if all the stones were pearls.’

They kept on going to heaven,
And there they knocked on the gate.
And there they knocked on the gate.

God said to Saint Peter:
‘Go and see who wants to come in?
Go and see who wants to come in?’

“The three sister want to come in,
That had died in one day.
That had died in one day.”

“The first one died early in the morning,
The second one died at noon,
The third one died in the evening.”

God said to Saint Peter:
“Tell me, what good did they do?
Tell me, what good did they do?”

The first two said this:
“We did everything that was good.
We did every thing that was good.”

“We gladly went to church,
Both of us were glad to pray
Gladly gave to the poor.”

But only the third one said:
“I did not do everything that was good.
I did not do everything that was good.”

“I did not gladly go to church,
I was not always glad to pray,
I was not always glad to give to the poor.”

God said to Saint Peter:
‘Go and tell the two to come in,
Let the other one go to the side.’

Saint Mary asked her Son:
“Son, forgive the soul her guilt,
Forgive her for my sake.”

‘No, I will not forgive the soul her guilt,
For this soul sinned greatly.
For this soul sinned greatly.’

For the second time Saint Mary asked:
“Son, forgive this soul her guilt.
Son, forgive her for my sake.”

‘No, I will not forgive the soul her guilt,
For this soul sinned greatly.
For this soul sinned greatly.’

For the third time, Saint Mary asked:
“Son, forgive this soul her guilt.
Son, forgive her for my sake.”

‘What good did this soul do,
That you are pleading for her so much?
That you are pleading for her so much?’

“She celebrated my day,
And she also bought a candle.
And she also bought a candle.”

“Also she knelt down at the same time
And at the same time thought,
And at the same time thought,”

“May you always shine, my candle
Shine for Saint Mary so pure,
Till it will finally burn out.”

God said to Saint Peter:
‘Take this soul by the hand,
And lead her three times through the fire.’

Peter led her for the first time,
The soul sank down up to her neck.
The soul sank down up to her neck.

Peter led her for a second time,
The soul sank down up to her waist.
The soul sank down up to her waist.

Peter led her for the third time,
The soul sank down up to her knees.
The soul sank down up to her knees.

Then he led her
To be forever in Paradise.
To be forever in Paradise.
