B. 009. The Orphans and the Widow's Comfort

(from Maja Rubyn in Burk)
Translated by H. Melvin Symmank

No one on the world goes it for them
So bad as the poor orphans,

So bad how the poor orphans,
Whose father, the mother are missing.

No one talks friendly to them,
No one begrudges them a kind word.

Also, my God, you speak to them,
Look down on them from heaven.

They carried the mother out of the house,
Many people went out behind her.

They carried the mother to the church yard,
The children cried so pitifully.

They let the mother down into the grave,
The children lifted their hands to heaven,

All the people they went to the house,
Our mother is no longer there.

All the children came to the house,
All cried, all so much.

The oldest son was now understanding,
Said: Oh, be quiet and do not cry!

Our God is yet in heaven,
He will guard, provide for us all.

No one on this world goes it for them,
So bad as the poor widow,

So bad as the poor widow,
Who no longer has her husband.

No one talks friendly to her,
No one begrudges her a kind word.

Also, my God, you speak to her,
Look down on her from heaven.
