B. 052. Conciliatory Proposal

(from Luebbenau)
Translated by H. Melvin Symmank

1. It sang, it sang the Nightingale
In deepest green spruce tree.
Who listens the same to her?
The beautiful maid listens to him.

2. You listen to the beautiful maid
Since the dearest draws near to her.
What do you hear then, dear child?
'I listen for the small bird.'

3. 'It sings so much, and pleases me
'The good voice of the little bird'
And then he took her by the hand,
And said to her: you come with me.

4. 'Oh, how should I then go with you,
'Since I am not yet your sweetheart?'
And are you now not yet my sweetheart
Surely you can become so soon.
