Nostitz, May 29, 1870

Greetings in the Name of our Dear Lord.

Dear Friends and Acquaintances,

We are compelled to turn to you, since our dear sister (born Duerlich) from Nostitz and our dear brother-in-law, Johann Groeschel, from Dresa, with their dear children, have decided to sail to America, and so far have actually completed, as far as we know, their plans. And they were certainly promised, that they would, as soon as possible, receive news from you, with a report at least by Ash Wednesday 1870, of how you are doing. But, as up to now, since we have received no news or have any idea whether you are living or dead, we are compelled to turn you again. We have read some of your former letters, and are respectfully hoping that you would not deny us this request, as our brother-in-law does not know whether you could, as soon as possible, send him news as to where you are and what you are doing.

Our dear old mother, as well as I and our dear sister and son-in-law, can no longer rest until they might hear from you. Our dear old mother always says that you all must be dead, otherwise you would write something, so that she could hear how you are. She is already over 80 years old, and each day hopes for her death. Please, be so kind to our brother-in-law and friends and write to us how you are. We are hoping that you are still alive and tell us, 1) how you got on the ship, 2) how things went while on the ship and, 3) whether you had to experience great danger on the trip, and how much it cost, 4) how it was when you got off the ship, 5) where you now are and what you are doing, and how you are and, 6) if you all are still living and if all are well, and how things are going with you.

By us, it is very pleasant and fruitful, and we look forward to a good crop. But we had a severe winter, such as we have not had for years, with temperatures as low as 28 degrees. But we are counting on again having much fruit. Our dear old mother was always sickly in the winter and we could not hope that she would live till the spring. But now she is again halfway well, and remarks about America with great interest. And so many others also now look for your letter. But we ask, that you would write us whole truth. The relatives (?) are looking forward with his two daughters to come to America. Please tell us also whether there is any available business for purchase, and what such a business would cost, and what otherwise an acre of land might cost.

We are mostly now hearty and healthy, thanks be to God. And we hope that these lines might reach you also in good health. May God continue to bless and keep you. When you write, send us the amount that we owe you. And now we want to close wishing that you might live in peace, till you here further from us.

Nostitz 29 Mai 1870

Habet nur den lieben Gott zum Gruss.

Liebe Freunde und Bekannte wir sind bezwungen sich an Sie zu wenden da unsre liebe Schwester geborne Dürlichen aus Nostitz und unser lieber Schwager Johann Gröschel aus Dresa mit ihren lieben Kindern sich entschlossen und hatten sich nach Amerika zu übersegeln, und haben es auch wirklich follbracht so weit wir wissen, und da Sie aus gewiss versprochen haben uns doch so bald wie möglich eine Nachricht von ihnen ausreit halte und von ihren Wohlgehen zu benachrichtigen so das wir doch wenichsten zur Fasnacht im Jahre 1870 eine Nachricht davon hätten. Da wir aber jetzt noch keine Nachricht noch eine Spur davon haben, ob Sie noch leben oder Sie Tod sind, und sonst nicht wissen wo Sie sind, so sind wir gezwungen sich an Sie zu wenden, da wir schon haben Briefe von Sie gelesen, und hoften mit aller Achtung, das Sie uns unsere Bitte nich werden versagen, wan der Schwager nicht kam das Sie uns doch einen Brief oder Nachricht wo Sie sind oder was Sie tuhn von Ihnen so bald wie möglich ertheilen.

Die liebe alte Mutter wie auch ich und lieben Schwestern und Schwäger haben keine Ruh nicht langer und macht das Sie nichts davon hören. Die liebe alte Mutter spricht imer Sie sind all Tod sonst täten Sie ihr doch etwas schreiben das Sie doch noch hörte wie es Ihnen geht, da Sie doch schon über 80 Jahre zühlt und jeden Tag ihren Tod hoffet. Und der lieben Schwäger und Freunde seit so gut und schreibt uns doch wie es Euch geht da wir doch hoffen das Ihr noch lebet wie Ihr 1) seit bis auf das Schiff gekommen, 2) wie es Euch auf dem Schiff ist gegangen, 3) ob Ihr doch nicht habt brauchen grosser Gefahr ausgehen müssen und wie war es mit der Kost, 4) Wie ging es Euch wie Ihr jetzt runder kommt, 5) Wo Ihr jetzt seit was Ihr jetzt betreibt und wie es Euch geht, ob Ihr noch alle lebt und ob Ihr noch alle Gesund seit und wie es bei Euch ist.

Bei uns ist jetzt sehr schön und Fruchtbar und wir nahen uns auch wieder eine schöne Ernte, aber einen strengen Winter hatten wir, wie wir in vielen Jahren nicht gehabt haben bis 28 Grad Kälte. Und wir rechnen auch wieder viel Obst. Die liebe Mutter war im Winter auch imer kränklich und wir hoften nicht, jetzt Sie wär dies Früjahr erleben, jetzt ist Sie wieder so halberwäge und bemerkt Gut auch noch grosse Lust nach Amerika und auch auf viele anderen, jetzt länger wir noch aus Euren Brief aber wir bitten Euch schreibt uns reiner Wahrheit. Die Gütte wird auch wieder im Wachen sein und sehen Gutt auch mit seiner 2 Töchter Lust nach Amerika und schreibt uns auch ob einer auch solche fertige Wirtschaften zu kaufen kriecht und was solche Wirtschaft dort kosten und was sonst der Aker Land dort kostet.

Wir sind fast noch bis jetzt Gott sei Dank, alle Frisch und Gesund und wir hoffen das auch Euch werden diese Zeilen bei gutter Gesundheit antreffen und der liebe Gott möchte Euch weiter beglücken und bewahren und wan Ihr schreibt so schickt uns doch eine richtige Betrag so mit. Und jetzt wollen wir schliessen Lebet ihn Frieden bis auf weiteres.
