In God’s Name, dear brother and Uncle –

I have received your letter from the year 1872 [and] have answered it on January 1, 1873. I have yet received no answer, whether you received my letter. I await it each day, but none comes. So I do not know if you are dead or alive. My wife and I are alive and well, by God’s grace. You wrote that you desire to visit us. So we awaited and rejoiced, but it was useless. We celebrated our golden wedding anniversary, sound and lively. It is a long but also a short time. The Aunt in Niethen died in 1873 as well as our Pastor Trautmann in Malschwitz in 1874. Now we have no Pastor. Now you can come to us and take over the office as it is vacant and we are lacking a Pastor. Positions are open in Kleinbautzen and Malschwitz. Also teachers are lacking. And the Neschwitzer pastor, Richter, has also died. But there that office has again been filled. Mr. Jacob was installed there. Mr. Sodan in Groszpostwitz is constantly sick and will perhaps not live very long. The Aunt’s entire property in Steindoerfel has burned up and she has great worry with the building. But she is insured. Therefore she has much money and can build anew. This is the most important [thing] that I will write to you: but I ask you, write me right soon again, as I await a letter in order to hear how things are going with you. If possible, come quite soon to visit us. But write beforehand then I can come towards you. Also the teacher in Weigersdorf died in 1873. And the Kubitz’s house and barn burned up. Therefore he has much distress on earth. Now we have much distress on earth but it will pass. Only the body hurts. The soul is eternal. If one receives the injury, then it is eternal. Then we must carry on. We now hear many other Pastors who preach to us: recently, Pastor Jemisch (?). I spoke with him and he sends you his greetings. He is sound and ... , and in his sermon he spoke about, ... how Jesus his faith ... is in threefold [?Trinity]. It was wonderful and heart moving.

Now we greet you dear Uncle and brother in Christ and your wife and children and all relatives. But mostly I, and my wife, your Aunt, and my sons Andrew and Peter, and Hanna, my daughter in Jenkwitz and all of her children desire for you that God may be a great power for you. God bless you all in spirit and body, now and in eternity.

I will say again: in the past year God has afflicted us with hail and mildew which resulted in a bad harvest. But in this year it has been constant.... So our hearts are discontented and unthankful. But God rules and blesses the least, if we only believe and we thank him for the least and honor him for his grace.

Dear uncle, we are now old – I am 71 and my wife is 77 years [old]. This is a long time, but also a short [time]. But the eternal is very long. It will not endure here very long. Perhaps this is the last letter I write to you on earth. I would very gladly see and speak with you yet again on earth. That is my wish. I commend to you the grace and mercy of God in Christ Jesus.

In Gottes Namen, lieber Bruder und Onkel, -

Deinen Brief aus dem Jahre 72 habe ich erhalten, habe auf ihn geantwortet 1873, am 1. Januar. Nun erhielt ich noch keine Antwort und weiß nicht, ob ihr meinen Brief bekommen habt. Ich warte jeden Tag, aber es kommt keiner. So weiß ich nicht, ob ihr lebt oder tot seid. Meine Frau und ich leben und sind gesund, in Gottes Gnade. Du schriebst mir, daß du uns besuchen willst. So haben wir gewartet und uns gefreut. Aber umsonst. Unsere goldene Hochzeit haben wir gefeiert, gesund und munter. Es ist eine lange aber auch kurze Zeit. Die Tante in Niethen ist 1873 gestorben und unser Pfarrer Trautmann in Malschwitz 1874 auch. Nun haben wir keinen Pfarrer. Nun komme du zu uns und übernimm das Amt, wenn es vakant ist und wenn Pfarrer bei uns fehlen. Ämter sind in Kleinbautzen und Malschwitz frei. Auch Lehrer fehlen. Und der Neschwitzer Pfarrer Richter ist auch verstorben. Aber da ist das Amt wieder besetzt. Herr Jakob wurde dort eingesetzt. Herr Sodan in Großpostwitz ist ständig krank und lebt vielleicht nicht mehr lange. Der Tante in Steindörfel ist ihr ganzes Anwesen abgebrannt und sie hat große Sorgen mit dem Gebäude. Aber sie ist versichert. So erhält sie viel Geld und kann neu bauen. Dies ist das wichtigste, was ich dir schreiben wollte. Aber ich bitte dich, schreibe mir recht bald wieder, denn ich warte auf einen Brief um zu hören, wie bei euch geht. Wenn möglich, komm recht bald zu uns zu Besuch. Aber schreibe vorher, dann komme ich dir entgegen. Auch die Lehrerin in Weigersdorf ist 1873 gestorben. Und Kubitz sind Haus und Scheune abgebrannt. So hat er viel Not auf Erden. Nun haben wir viel Not auf Erden, was aber vorübergeht. Nur der Körper schmerzt. Die Seele aber ist ewig. Wenn die Schaden nimmt, dann ist er ewig. Den müssen wir tragen. Wir hören nun häufiger andere Pfarrer, die bei uns predigen. Kürzlich Pfarrer Jemisch (?). Ich sprach mit ihm und er läßt dich grüßen. Er ist gesund und ..., und in seiner Predigt sprach er darüber, ... wie Jesus seine Gläubigen .... Auf dreierlei Art. Es war wunderschön und ergriff das Herz.

Nun grüßen wir dich, lieber Onkel und Bruder in Christus, und deine Frau und Kinder und alle Bekannten. Am meisten aber ich und meine Frau, deine Tante, und meine Söhne Andreas und Peter, und Hanna, meine Tochter in Jenkwitz und alle ihre Kinder wünschen dir das. Möge Gott euch eine große Kraft sein. Gott segne euch alle im Geiste und Körper, hier und in Ewigkeit.

Das will ich noch sagen: im vergangenen Jahr strafte Gott uns mit Hagel und Mehltau. Das bedeutete eine schlechte Ernte. In diesem Jahr ist es aber ständig ... . So sind wir im Herzen unzufrieden und undankbar. Gott aber ist reich und segnet das Wenige, wenn wir nur glauben und uns für das Wenige bedanken und ihn ehren für seine Gnade.

Lieber Onkel, wir sind nun alt - ich 71 und meine Frau 77 Jahre. Dies ist eine lange Zeit, aber auch eine kurze. Aber die Ewigkeit wird sehr lang. Hier wird es nicht mehr lange dauern. Das ist vielleicht der letzte Brief, den ich auf Erden an dich schreibe. Sehr gern würde ich dich noch einmal sehen und sprechen auf Erden. Das ist mein Wunsch. Ich empfehle dich der Gnade und Barmherzigkeit Gottes in Christus Jesus,

A tež šrybarjo faluja, a Njeswačanski duchowny Rychtar je tež wumrěł, ale tam je wobsadźene. Tam je knjez Jakob postajeny do hamta. Sodan w Bukecach je přeco chory a snadź dołho žiwy njebudźe, ale tej ćeće w Trjebjency je so cyły dwór spalił a ma wulku starosć w twarjenju, tola měješe zawěsćene. Tuž dóstanje tola wjele pjenjez a móže zaso twarić. To je to najnuzniše, štož mějach tebi pisać, ale ja prošu tebje, pisaj mi tola bórze zaso, dokelž jara na list čakam, kak pola was dźe. Nětko postrowimy tebje, luby wujo a bratře w Chrystu a twoju žonu a twoje dźěći a wšitkich znatych ale najwjace ja a moja žona, twoja ćeta, a mojej synaj Handrij a Pětr, a Hana, moja dźowka w Jenkecach, a wšitke jich dźěći, ći to přeja. Bóh być waš wšěm wulka móc, a žohnuj was wšitkich na ćěle a na dušu jow we času a tam wěčnje.

Jedne chcu spomnić, loni nas Bóh šwikaše z krupami a pomjedźu. Tuž běchu chude žně, a lětsa je pak přeco ... , tuž wutroba je njespokojna a njedźakna. Ale Bóh je bohaty a žohnuje to mało, hdyž jenož wěru mamy a so jemu za to mało dźakujemy a jeho chwalimy za jeho hnadu.

Luby wujo, mój smój nětko staraj - ja 71 lět a moja žona je 77 lět. To je dołhi čas, ale tola krótki, ale ta wěčnosć ta budźe dołha, ale jow njebudźe wjace dołho trać. Tuž je to snadź tón posledni list, kiž ja tebi sćelu na zemi, ja bych tebje tola rady hišće jónkróč widźał a ertnje z tobu rěčał na zemi - to je moje žadanje - ja poruču tebje Božej hnadźe a smilnosći w Chrysu Jězusu,
