B. 084. Faithful Love

(From: Naundorf, Burk, etc.)
Translated by Ed Bernthal

Mother combs the daughter’s hair,
And shields her very much.
‘Leave your loved one,
Leave the first one.’

“I will not leave my loved one,
The first one I had loved.
I love him more warmly and truly,
Than my two brothers.”

She shut up the faithful girl
In a new room.
‘Sit here for a year’s time,
Till you forget about your love !’

“Oh, my loved one I will not forget,
Till my heart is broken.
He has me always in his thoughts,
And so also I have him.”

Look, there flew freely
Two white doves.
They flew up in the sky
And then sat themselves down.

They sat down, yes sat down
At the girl’s room.
“What will you give us,
If we built you a window?”

“So you can see out,
See your loved one go by?”
‘Oh what good is seeing him,
When he can’t talk with me?’

“He will come to see you here,
Also come to talk to you.”
So they now made, made there
A bright window.

The girl looks out of the window,
Toward the green meadow.
She sees him in the meadow,
Her sweetheart mowing grass.

He went with his hands
There along the meadow,
Plucking, plucking there so diligently
The flowers red and white.

Planted them, yes planted them
By her room.
“When the flowers will fade,
You will see us separated.”

The flowers standing there
Were always more beautiful.
“So we will be united
And never be separated.”
