The Reverend dear President!

I received your June 8th letter on of 15th. From your writing I realize that all human procedures are an imperfect patchwork, as we all know. (1 Cor. 13:9-13.) No one among us is without sin, rather we all sin in a variety of ways. (James 3:2) People are not worth anything, important people also sin. (Psalm 62:10)

Yet I will try to clarify my thoughts for you which my colleagues intentionally or unintentionally have misunderstood. That cannot happen today, but at a later time. Because in my letter today I can only give you an historical introduction to it.

On 24 September 1837 while I was a pastor in Saxony for 11 years, I explored the prophetic and apostolic writings of the Old and New Testaments, as they are interpreted in the confessional writings of our church. And I find myself in full agreement with the symbolic doctrines, and also with the teachings of the Schmalkald articles that the Pope with his presumptive claims is the Anti-Christ. But if all the teachings of the Symbolic books are truly doctrines is questionable. An example will clarify what I mean. But who will decide if the sentence that “the holy seat at Rome is the chief and highest protector of all thieves” [Large Catechism, 7th Commandment] is a doctrine or not?

St. Paul correctly portrayed our place on earth when he said “When I was a child I spoke as a child and thought as a child, and did childish things.” In such imperfection someone has finally started the child’s play of an Inquisition with me. Torquemadas Inquisition was also a gruesome child’s play that passed over like a thunderstorm.

The freedom of discussion and debate prevailed in the conference at Big Cypress from the 17th to 20 September 1876. This freedom also prevailed at the conference at Serbin on April 10, 1877. But on April 11 a procedure took place which reminded one of Rome. I was given formulated questions, as before a court, to which I was supposed to answer yes or no. With that the freedom and brotherliness of our brothers in Texas was killed. I did not answer yes, but declared that my Big Cypress mission sermon given on 17 September 1876 which had been set aside, now had to be printed. But while I was led as a lamb to the slaughter, everything broke loose without a word being said, so naturally I also do not know from the procedure, that was drafted against me and publically read. How can anyone who has been caught in an Inquisition pay attention to procedure?

Because my last word in the Inquisition was that my mission sermon given at Big Cypress must be printed, I will now copy my sermon and send you a copy within 4 weeks. Until you have my sermon in your hands, you cannot understand my point of view. When, however, you have this my mission sermon in your hands, then I will delineate the Corpus delicti in regard to my interpretation of the Anti-Christ and the Last Day for you in a special letter.

Hochwürdigen Geliebter Herr Präses!

Ihren Brief von 8ten June habe ich am 15ten erhalten. Aus Ihren Schreiben erkenne ich, daß menschliche Protokolle ein unvollkommenes Stückwerk sind, wie all unser Wissen (1 Kor. 13, 9-13.) Unser keiner ist unfehlbar, sondern wir fehlen alle mannigfaltiglich. (Jac. 3, 2.) Menschen sind da doch nichts, große Leute fehlen auch, sie wägen weniger, denn nichts, so viel ihrer ist. (Psalm 62, 9.)

Dennoch will ich versuchen, meine Meinung, welche von den Amtsbrüdern mit oder ohne Absicht mißverstanden worden ist, Ihnen deutlich zu machen. Das kann aber nicht heute, sondern erst später geschehen. Denn der heutige Brief kann Ihnen nur eine historische Einleitung dazu geben.

Am 24sten September 1837 schwur ich in Sachsen, wo ich 11 Jahre Pastor war, auf die prophetischen und apostelischen Schriften altes und neues Testaments, wie sie in der Bekenntnißschriften unserer Kirche ausgelegt sind. Und ich finde mich mit den wirklichen Lehrsätzen der Symbole in voller Uebereinstimmung, auch mit den Satz der Schmalkaldischen Artikel, daß der Papst um seiner Selbstüberhebung willen der rechte Widerchrist sei. Ob aber alle Sätze der symbolischen Bücher wirkliche Lehrsätze sind, steht in Frage. Ein Beispiel wird klar machen, was ich meine. Aber will entscheiden ob der Satz, das "der heilige Stuhl zu Rom das Haupt und oberster Schutzheer aller Diebe sei" (Gross. Katech. 7tes Gebot) ein Lehrsätz ist oder nicht?

Paulus schildert wohl recht unsern Zustand auf Erden, da er sagt: "Da ich ein Kind war, da redete ich wie ein Kind und war klug wie ein Kind und hatte kindische Anschläge". In solcher Unvollkommenheit hat man letzt das Kinderspiel einer Inquisition mit mir angefangen. Auch Torquemada's Inquisitionen waren ein grausames Kinderspiel, das vorüber ging wie ein Wetter.

Die Freiheit der Discussion und Disputation hatte geherrscht in der Conferenz zu Big Cypress vom 17ten bis zum 20sten September 1876. Diese Freiheit hat auch geherrscht in der Conferenz zu Serbin am 10ten April 1877. Aber am 11ten April ereignete sich eine Procedur, welche an Rom erinnert. Man stellte mir formulirte Fragen, wie vor Gericht, und ich sollte darauf Ja oder Nein antworten. Damit ist die Freiheit und Brüderlichkeit unter uns Brüdern in Texas todtgeschlagen. Ich antwortete nun nicht Ja, sondern erklärte, daß meine in Big Cypress am 17 September 1876 gehaltene Missionspredigt, welche beiseite gelegt sei, nun gedruckt werden müsse. Weil ich aber wie ein Lamm, das zur Schlachtbank geführet wird, alles über mich gehen ließ, ohne ein Wort zu sagen, so weiß ich auch natürlich nichts vom Protokoll, das über mich abgefaßt worden war und vorgelesen worden ist. Wie kann einer, den die Inquisition erfaßt hat, auf Protokolle Obacht haben?

Da nun mein letztes Wort in der Inquisition das gewesen ist, daß meine in Big Cypress gehaltene Missionspredigt gedruckt werden müsse, so werde ich diese meine Predigt nun abschreiben und Ihnen einsenden binnen 4 Wochen. Denn bevor Sie diese meine Predigt nicht in den Händen haben, können Sie meine ganze Anschauung nicht wissen. Wenn Sie aber diese meine Missionspredigt in Ihren Händen haben werden, will ich Ihnen das Corpus delicti im Betreff meiner Auffassung des Antichrists und des jüngsten Tages in einem besondern Briefe darstellen.
