In Christ Jesus, beloved gathering of mourners; especially you dear family,

We are all gathered here, at the death of a departed sister, to hear the voice of God from his Word in this sad hour. He, who has by his loving counsel, called out of this life full of trouble the deceased, wants to speak to us. We have gathered here not only to accompany our deceased fellow Christian to the grave in a respectful way, but also in this hour of mourning, draw comfort from the well of God’s Word; yes, most of all that we ourselves be reminded, that we will also have to die, so that we may be made wise.

You mourning survivors, are in need of consolation, for it is a beloved Mother who has been taken from you; a Mother and Grandmother who, in her very motherly care, had performed many services for you with her active and busy hands in her house work. But now she has departed from you. For the last time in this life you have looked into her pale face. Parting is not without pain. Well do we all need the consolation, when we think of it that each of us, either sooner or later, will have to walk through the dark valley of death. O! how welcome then will be every heavenly ray of light, that will lead us; how pleasant will be every rod on which we can lean. But where else are we to find light for the dark night of death, and a rod and staff for our death journey, except in the Word of God?

Such consolation, and at the same time a sincere admonition, we find in the text that was read. Still, let me now present to you a consolation and meaningful word at the death of the deceased. We will consider:

I) The Consolation
II) The Meaning



Once, when the Lord came to the dear sisters, Martha and Mary, the former one, was first concerned with providing the external needs of the Lord, while Mary was only concerned with listening to the sweet words of Jesus. Martha now complained that Mary was not helping her. The Lord answered her: “Martha, Martha, you are troubled and careful about many things. But one thing is needful, and Mary has chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her”. By this, the Lord wanted to say: You are very much concerned with physical serving. But Mary is wiser, she is concerned about the one thing that is most necessary, the serving of her soul. “One thing is needful”, this call came from the one who came into the world, to seek and save sinners. With this brief word, the Lord wants to call attention to the deep, sinful ruin in which each person lies by nature. It is the terrible, the inexpressibly ruin into which mankind has been thrown. They are the servant of sin, children of wrath, possession of the devil. And nothing else awaits natural man than death and eternal agony and pain.

So the one things is needful! If man wants to escape his own ruin, and wants to be free from his sin, he will have to be reconciled with an angered God and become righteous before him. But no man can do this out of his own strength, since all are dead in their trespasses and sins. Yes, natural man can do nothing but sin, and continue to heap upon himself new anger and curses. So the one thing is needful! It is the grace and mercy of God, in which he did not spare his only Son, but gave him up for us all. And this Jesus Christ fulfilled the law for us through his complete obedience. He paid the debt of all our sins, and won for us the victory over all of our enemies, sin, death, devil and hell, and reconciled us to God, and opened heaven to us. Now, the call is sounded out to all mankind, “one thing is needful”, namely that you accept and believe what God in Christ has done for us. And Mary chose the good part, Christ and his Word. And whoever believes in Christ is made righteous, and whoever endures to the end will be saved. Then, for those who die in faith, the good part will not be taken from them. Death will have no more power over them, the sting of death has been broken, the devil and hell have no more claim on them, for they are children of God and heirs of everlasting salvation. No pain can touch the righteous soul, they are in God’s hand.

So then, dear mourners! Take hold of this consolation at the death of your dear deceased mother in the words: “One thing is needful, and Mary has chosen that good part which shall not be taken away from her”.

Even though the deceased, shortly after her confirmation, where she promised loyalty to her Lord, became lost, like Martha, in her concern for passing earthly things, and so was estranged from God and spiritual trust in her life with God, the Lord again received her soul and led her by the influence of the call from his holy Word and recalled her to his grace. And the call came to her: “One thing is needful!” In recognition of her sinful condition she chose, by the grace of God, the good part again. And this will not be taken away from her. During the last years of her earthly life, she sat at the feet of Jesus, faithfully attended the worship services, and received the Word of Grace from the Gospel, took part in the Sacrament of the Altar for the assurance of the forgiveness of her sins. Yes, since she took hold of the means of grace, without a doubt, she found the one thing needful and remained true to her faith in Christ and his redemption. And this faith she retained and kept it through the fire of her tribulations during her final suffering, which the Lord laid upon her. She confessed that she was a poor sinner and desired, for the strengthening of her faith in her Savior, the Sacrament of his body and blood. The Lord did not lay anything on her that she could not bear. In her time of need, she learned to commit herself to the Lord in prayer. And surely, the Lord granted her the good part, and kept her in the faith for her salvation. How comforting this should be for you that are left behind. Your mother has departed from you, but has not been lost. Be comforted! In heaven you will find her again. There she is resting from the burdens and pains of this earth. She now lives in everlasting joy, beholding the face of God. Good for her that her lot has fallen her in pleasant places, and she has received a blessed inheritance. But dear gathering of mourners, let me now direct you, secondly, to the meaning that lies in our text.



The meaning of “One thing is needful”, is no longer necessary for the deceased. She is now resting in peace, has been relieved of all the needs of her body and soul, and is beholding what she has believed. But for us, the meaning is still necessary very much. We are still living as foreigners, facing the temptations of the devil, the world and our own flesh. Therefore, the one thing is urgently needed Or we could ask the questions: Do we really have no need? Are we really good enough to be sure of our salvation without a Savior? O beloved, that which the Lord told Martha applies to all of us. “One thing is needful! One thing is needful!” We tend too easily to care and worry about the earthly, and forget that the “one thing needful” is the only necessary thing needed for preparing for a blessed end. Many will think of death only when death is staring them in the face. Therefore, it should be our daily prayer: Lord, teach us to consider that we have to die, so that we might be wise and will be saved. The real wisdom, however, consist of this that we leave behind the earthly and, without delay, choose the good part. Yes, without delay, for you do not know when you will have to die. The number of years and months is not in your hands, but in the hands of the all-knowing God. So then, let us pray to God, who alone can give us the gift of the good part, that God would begin and work in us:

One thing’s needful; Lord, this treasure
Teach me highly to regard;
All else, though it first gives pleasure,
Is a yoke that presses hard.
Beneath it the heart is still fretting and striving
No true lasting happiness ever deriving
The gain of this one thing all loss can requite
And teach me in all things to find true delight.

But this one thing is only to be found in God’s Word, in which Christ and his redemption, his salvation and righteousness for all sinners is found, and in which he wants to give it to us. Therefore, my beloved, if we want to receive this, let us diligently hear God’s Word with devotion, ponder it in our heart, and receive it in true faith, so that it may be a light to our feet, that lightens our way, be our heart’s consolation, and our staff and stay in the hour of our death. Let us faithfully hear the Word, so that it will show itself to be our strength from God for our salvation. Then, by the grace of God, the good part will not be taken from us. Christ will stand by our side, and we will, by the power of God, be kept through faith unto salvation. Nothing shall separate the believer from the love of God in Christ, but he will take us from this vale of tears to himself in heaven.

So then, you mourning survivors, choose and keep, by the grace of God, that one thing that is needed, and hold on to Christ, the faithful Savior, so you will be able to overcome all the tribulations of this time, sin and death. Then you will also be able to celebrate a wonderful reunion with your departed mother.

And we all want to unshakably look forward to our eternal salvation, and therefore build on Christ and his redemption, and, to his glory, live a Christian life. Then, when our last hour will come with its death struggle, he will not forsake us, but with his mighty hand, help us to come to his heavenly kingdom. And with him we will then have the fullness of joy at his right hand forever. May he grant that to us for the sake of his precious redemption. Amen.

In Christi Jesus, geliebte Trauerversammlung: ins besondere ihr lieben Angehoerigen!

Wir sind alle hier versammelt um beim Tode einer eintschlafenen Mitschwester in ernster Stunde Gottes Stimme in seinen Wort hoeren. Er, der die Entschlafene nach seiner liebes Rath aus diesem Leben voll Jammersacht da abgerufen, will mit uns reden. Wir sind hier erschienen nicht nur unserer entschlafene Mitchristen nach ehrlicher Weise ein ehrenvolles Geleit zum Grabe zugeben, sondern auch in der Stunde des Trauernis den rechten Trost und aus den Trost bruenlein das Wortes Gottes zu schoepfen; ja allermeist uns selbst davon errinnern zu lassen, das auch wir streben muessen, auf das wir klug werden.

Wohl beduerft ihr trauerend Hinterbleibenen des Trostes. Denn es ist doch ein geliebte Mutter, die von euch geschieden ist; eine Mutter u Grossmutter, die in recht mutterliecher Sorge mit ruhrigen, thaetigen Haenden auch manche dienst im Hauswesen leistete. Nun aber ist sie von euch geschieden; zum letzten mal habt ihr diesem Leben ihr ins bleiche Antlitz geschaut. Nicht onhne Schmerz ist die Trennung. Wohl beduerfen auch wir alle des Trostes, wenn wir darum denken, das auch ein jedes von uns einst frueher oder spaeter durchs finstre Thal des Todes wandern mus. O! wie willkommen mus uns dann jeder himilische Lichtstrahl sein, der uns dann leuchtet; wie angenehm jeder Stab, auf den wir uns stuetzen koennen. Wo anders aber finden wir Licht fuer die finstern Todesnacht u. einen Stecken u Stab fuer unsern Todesgang, als in Gottes Wort?

Solchen Trost u. zugleich eine herzliche Ermahnung finden wir in unseren verlessenen Texte. Den noch last mich euch jetzt vorstellen:

Als der Herr einst bei den lieben Schwestern Martha und Maria einkehrte, da machte sich esrtere, viel zu schaffen, dem Herrn aeusere Dienste zu verweisen; waehrened Maria nur beflissen war des suesen Worte Jesu zu zuhoeren. Martha beschwert sich nun, das ihre Schwester nicht auch mit angreife u. die nun helfe. Da antwortete ihr der Herr: Martha, Martha, du hast viel Sorge u. Muehe. Aber eins ist Noth. Maria hat das gute Theil erwaehlt; das soll nicht von ihr genommen werden. Damit wollte der Herr sagen: du sorgst zwar mit Fleis um leibliche Bewirthung. Maria aber is klueger, so sorgt fuer das Eine, das am allernoethigsten ist, fuer die Bewirthung ihrer Seelen. “Eins ist noth”, diese Martha ruft derjenige aus, der in der Welt gekommen ist, die Suender zu suchen und selig zu machen. Mit diesem kurzen Worte will der Herr vor allem beweisen auf das tiefe suendliche Verderben, in dem jeder Mensch von Natur liegt. Es ist erschrecklich, in welche tiefe Grube unsaeglicher Verderbens sich die Menschen gestuerzt haben; sie sind Knechte der Suende, Kinder des Zorns, Leibrigens des des Satans geworden u. nichts anders erwartet den natuerlichen Menschen nach seinem Tode als ewige Qual und Pein.

So ist dan einst noth! Will der Mensch dem einigen Verderben verrinnen, das er seiner Suende los werde, so mus er mit dem ueber ihn erzuernten Gott versoehnt u. vor ihm gerecht werden. Es kann dieses aber kein Mensch aus eigener Kraft; denn sie sind alle todt durch Uebertretung u. Suenden. Ja, nichts als suendigen kann der natuerliche Mensch u. nur immer mehr neuen Zorn u. Fluch auf sich haeufen. So ist dan einst noth! Die Gnade u. Barmherzigkeit Gottes, nach welcher er seinen einigen Sohn nicht verschont hat, sondern fuer uns alle danhingegeben. Und dieser Jesus Christus hat das Gesetz vollkommen fuer uns erfuehlt durch seinen vollkommenen Gehorsam. Er hat alle unsere Suendenschuld bezahlt; alle unsern Feinde, Suende, Tod, Teufel u. Hoelle fuer uns siegreich ueberwundern; uns mit Gott versoehnt u. uns dem Himmel aufgethan. Und nun erschalt an alle Menschen der Rief: Eins ist noth! Naemlich, das ihr glaubet u. annehmt was Gott und Christum an euch getan hat. Und Maria hat das gute Theil, Christum und sein Wort jetzt erwaehlt. Und wer Christum glaubt, der ist gerecht u. wer beharet bis am Ende, der wird selig. Dann welche im Glauben sterben, denen soll in Ewigkeit das gute Theil nicht genommen werden. Der Tod hat keine gewalt mehr an ihnen; der Stachel des Todes ist gebrochen; der TEufel u. die Hoelle haben kein Recht mehr an ihnen; denn sie sind Gottes Kinder u. Erben der ewigen Seeligkeit. Und der Gerechten Seelen ruehrt keine Qual, sie sind in Gottes Hand.

Wohlan dann, geliebte Leidtragende! So fasset dann diesen Trost bei dem Tode euren thueren entschlafenen Mutter in dem Wort: “Eins ist noth. Maria hat das gute Theil erwaehlet, u. das soll nicht v. ihr genommen werden”.

Wiewohl die Entschlafenen das Eine, das noth thut, bald nach ihrer Confirmation, die sie dem Herrn Treue gelobt, verloren einsich nach Martha’s Weise viel Sorge viel machte um irdische vergaengliche Dinge; u. so auf geistliche Trauen grerathend dem Leben, das uns Gott ist, entfremdet wurde, so hat doch Gott sich ihrer Seele wieder herzlich angenommen u. sie wieder unter den Schall seines goetlichen Worts gefuehrt u. zu seiner Gnade gerufen. Und es wuerde ihr zugerufen: Eins ist noth! In Erkenntnis ihres suendlichen Verderben erwaehlt sie durch Gottes Gnade das gute Theil. Und es sollte nicht von ihr genommen werden. Die letzten Jahre ihres Erdenleben sass sie zu den Fuessen Jesu, besuchte fleisig die Gottesdienste u. vernahm das Gnadenwort des Evangelium, nahm theil am Sacrament des Alters zur Versicherung der Vergebung ihrer Suenden. Ja, weil sie sich zu den Mitteln der Gnade Gottes gehalten hat, so zweifeln wir nicht, das sie auch das Eine das noehtigt ist, darin gefunden u. sich im Glauben an Christum u. sein Verdienst gehalten hat. Und diesem Glauben hat sie behalten u. er wurde noch bewahrt durch die Feuer der Truebsalen der letzten Leiden, die ihr der Herr auferlegte. Sie erkannte sich als einen armen Suender u. begehrte zur Staerkung ihres Glauben an ihren Heiland das Sacrament seines Leibes u. Blutes. Der Herr legte ihr auch nicht mehr auf als sie ertragen konnte. In der Noth lernte sie sich in Gottes Willen fuegen u. zu ihn beten. Und gewiss hat der Herr ihr das gute Theil erhalten u. sie durch den Glauben bewahrt zur Seeligkeit. Wie troestlich ist das auch fuer euch Hinterliebenen. Die Mutter ist von euch geschieden, aber auch nicht verloren gegangen. Seid getroest! Im Himmel koennt ihr sie wieder finden. Da ruht sie aus von der Last u. Qual dieser Erde. Sie lebt nun ewig in Freuden im Anschauen des Gesichts Gottes.Wohl ihr ist ein schoen Habteil geworden. Doch geliebte Trauenversammlung, last mich auch nun noch zweitens auf der Mahnung hinweisen, die in unserem Texte liegt.



Die Mahnung: “Einst ist Noth”, had die Entschlafenen nicht mehr noetig; sie ruht nun ganz in Frieden; sie ist alles Leibes u. Seelennoth enthoben, schaut nun das was sie geglaubt hat. Uns aber thut die Mahnung noch recht noth. Wir weilen noch in diesem Jammerthal u. sind noch in der Fremde u. den Versuchungen des Teufels, der Welt u. unsers eigenen Fleisch ausgesezt. Uns ist darum das Eine noch dringend noth. Oder, wollen wir es in Frage strellen: hat es mit uns wirklich keine noth! Sind wir wirklich frommgenug, nun ohne einen Heiland der Seeligkeit gewis sein zu koennen? Ach, geliebte, das, was der Herr der Martha zurief, gilt uns allen. Einst ist noth! Eins ist noth! Wir machen uns nur zu leicht zu viele Muehe und Sorgen um das Irdische u.vergessen dasrueber das einzig noethige, die rechte Vorbereitung auf ein seliges Ende. Wie manches denkt erst dann an den Tod, wenn derselbe ihn schon winkt! Darum sei unser taegliches Gebet: Herr, lehre uns bedenken, das wir sterben muessen, auf das wir klug u. Selig werden. Die rechte Klugheit jedoch besteht aber darin, das Irdische dahinten zu lassen u. ohne Verzug das gute Theil zu waehlen. Ja, ohne Verzug, denn du weist nicht wann du sterben must. Die Zahl der Jahre u. Monate steht nicht bei dir, sondern bei ihm, den allwissenden Gott. So wollen wir dann Gott, der allein das gute Theil uns schenken, das Gute in uns anfangen u.wirken mus, bitten: Einst ist noth ach Herr dies Eine, lehre mich erkennen doch, alles andre wies noch scheine, ist ja nur ein schweres Joch, darueber das Herze sich neiget und gleiget u. dennoch kein wahres Vergnuegen erjaget; erlang ich das Eine, das alles ersetzt, so wird ich mit Einen in allen ergoetzt.

Dies Eine ist aber nur in Gottes Wort zu finden, darin in Christum u. seinen Verdienst, seine Gnade, sein Heil u. Gerechtigkeit fuer alle Suender niederlegt u. dariinen er es ihnen schenken will.

Darin, meine Lieben, wollen wir es erlangen. So lasst uns Gottes Wort fleisig hoeren, mit Andacht hoeren, im Herzen bewegen, u. in einfuelligen Glauben annehmen damit unsers Fusses leuchte, das Licht auf unserem Wege, unsers Herzen Trost, unser Stocken u. Stab in Suenden u. Todesnoth sei. Lasst uns das Wort fleisig hoeren, so wird es sich auch erweisen als eine Kraft Gottes zur Seeligkeit. Dann soll durch Gottes Gnade das gute Theil nicht von uns genommen werden; Christus wird uns zur Seite stehen u. wir werden aus Gottes Macht durch den Glauiben bewahrt zur Seeligkeit.. Nichts soll den Glaeubigen scheiden von der Liebe Gottes in Chrissto, sondern er wird sie von diesem Jammerthal zu sich nehmen in den Himmel.

Wohlan dann ihr trauerend Hinterbliebenen, erwaehlt u. bewahret durch Gottes Gnade, das Eine, das noth thut, haltet auch an Christum, den treuen Heiland, so werdet ihr durch ihn ueberwinden alle Traurigkeit dieser Zeit, Suende u. Tod. Dann werdet ihr auch einst wieder einfaliges Wiedersehen mir einer entschlafener Mutter feiern koennen.

Und wir alle wollen auf das eine Ziel, die ewige Seeligkeit unverrueckt hinschauen darum auf Christum u. sein Verdienst bauen u. ihn zu Ehren Christlich leben. Kommt dann unser letztes Stuendlein u. Todeskampf, dann wird er uns nicht verlassen, sondern mit seiner maechtigen Hand uns aushelfen zu seinem himmlischen Reich. Und vor ihm wird dann sein Freude die Fuelle u. liebliches Wesen zu seiner Rechten ewiglich. Das wolle er uns verleihen um sein theures Verdienstes willen. Amen
