A. 061. Fun Song

(From: Neudorf near Koenigswarte)
Translated by Ed Bernthal

Behind our bake oven, the mosquitoes are playing
Mosquitoes are playing,
Mending their greenish-red little coats.

There in our puddles, the frogs are croaking
Frogs are croaking
Carrying green (suspenders) and gray laundry.

Behind our shed, the sparrows are building
Sparrows are building
From the sparse corn, and gossiping about the farmer.

There in the barn, the mice are squeaking
Mice are squeaking
Making the grain to rise in price.

There in our wheat field, the quail calls
The quail calls
Bring me luck! Bring me luck! You old woman.

Under our roof, sit four cats
Sit four cats
Cracking plum kernels for our rats.

High up in the starling nests, the starlings are piping
Starlings are piping
Gathering in flocks for the good sausage.

Across our borders Nochteners are hunting
Nochteners are hunting
Bringing us tar for the wagons at the fair.
