A. 074. The Redemption

(From: Mortka)
Translated by Ed Bernthal

The shepherd grazed in the meadow
The sheep gleaming as white as snow
The shepherd went around like a master.

Many people passed by the shepherd
And they all said to him, “God be with you!”
And they all took their hats off to him.

‘Why are you taking off your hats?
I am surely not a nobleman
I am surely not a nobleman.”

“If you were not a nobleman
You would not go about in silk and satin
You would not wear the gold-laced hat.”

‘Why should I not go so nicely dressed
When my loved one loves me so much
That she has dressed me so wonderfully.’

“O, don’t use, don’t use such proud words
Otherwise we will throw you in the tower
Into the tower, into the cruel prison.”

‘I see, I hear my father is coming here.
Just sell a half hundred of my sheep here
And release me from prison.’

A half hundred sheep are more dear to me
Than you are, my disobedient son
As you are, my disobedient son.

‘I see, I hear my mother coming here.
Sell two cows, my mother
And release me, my disobedient son.

‘I see, I hear my brother is coming here.
Sell the gold-colored horse, my brother
And release me from this cruel prison.’

My gold-colored horse is more dear to me
Than the disobedient brother that you are
Than the disobedient brother that you are.

‘I see, I hear my sister is coming here.
Sell my fancy coat, my sister,
And release me from this cruel prison.’

My fancy coat is dearer to me
Than you are, my disobedient brother
Than you are, my disobedient brother.

‘I see, I hear my beloved one is coming here.
Sell my coral necklace, my beloved one
And release me from this cruel prison.’

The shepherd was released from prison.
Four musicians played for him
Four musicians played for him.

The more the musicians player there
The more the shepherd servant cried
The more the shepherd servant cried.

‘Even though father and mother passed by
Still father and mother had no mercy on me
Still father and mother had no mercy on me.’

‘Even though brother and sister passed by
Still brother and sister had no mercy on me
Only my beloved had mercy on me.’
