There were, there were to two young lads,
Who went into a gray little Castle.

They rode in hurriedly on yellow-dun horses
Into our Village Mayor's new yard.

The Village Mayor went around in the yard
In a black robe down to the earth.

God help you, God help you, my Mrs. Village Mayor!
Where have you, where have you your little daughter?

"Welcome, Welcome you young lads to us,
From beyond the field so strange here by us.

Dismount now from your horses,
And come to me now for evening bread."

‘We will not dismount from our horses,
we will not come to you for evening bread.

Since you have not declared to us,
Where you have your dear little daughter.’

“My daughter, indeed, she is not at home,
She has gone to Krostwiz for beer.”

The young lads did not dismount their horses
And rode then hurriedly to Krostwiz.

The barmaid stood prepared upon the threshold
in herr refined silk clothing.

"Welcome, welcome you two young men
From beyond the fields so strange to us here.

So dismount from your horses
And come to us here for a mug of beer.”

‘From our horses indeed we will dismount
And come to you for a mug of beer.’

The young men came entering the house,
That their spurs clanked so loud.

The young men came entering into the house,
That the boards of the room bent.

The young maiden had the preliminary dance,
But always sprang out of the dance.

Yet always sprang out of the dance
And reached for the young man's welcoming hand:

“Welcome, welcome you two young men,
Welcome my dear ones set apart.

Welcome, welcome you two young men,
To evening meal now come with me.”

‘We will not go to eat with you,
You have spoken an arrogant word.’

“Oh, do not look upon my arrogance,
I was just kidding you.

‘And were you kidding a little,
Arrogant words are not befitting you.’
