A. 110. The Messenger

(From: Dehsa)
Translated by Ed Bernthal

There were two young people
Who loved each other honestly and truly.

They ate together for the first time,
When the drum roll called the loved one.

‘I will follow the roll of the drum,
But who will take care of my loved one?’

‘First. I entrust her to the dear Lord,
Then to all the single youth in the place.’

‘Then to all the single youth in the place.
Then to all the good girls as well.’

‘But who will be my messenger
When the pain of sickness touches us?’

‘When the pain of sickness touches us,
Sinks one or the other one in the grave.’

“There is a bird in the green forest.
The bird shall be our messenger.”

The bird always flew happily there.
But one time he brought bad news.

‘Mourn, mourn now, girl,
The dear one is dead, your dear one.’
