A. 120. The Rescue

(From: Wittichenau)
Translated by Ed Bernthal

There behind the barns in the fields
Is a small, small bridge
It is only knee-deep
And one foot wide.

Who walked over the bridge?
The girl’s loved one all alone,
When he came to chat in the evening
And came back from the chat early in the morning.

But finally it was found out
By the girl’s old and stern father.
Then he built for her
A very small room.

Yes, a very small room,
A very secure room.
It was walled in from the bottom
And it was vaulted at the top.

He placed nine watchmen for her
Nine watchmen he placed there.
The tenth one was the gate keeper.
All were to be watchful.

The girl was yet so small
Yet so small, yet so young.
Still so small, still so young,
Still so naïve.

‘Now tell me, my little sister.
Give me good advice.
Now give me good advice
About my loved one.’

“I will give you my advice
If you only will follow it:
Get out for him a green coat,
Give your Luendisch coat to him.”

“Put a lace trimming on his head,
Your lace trimming with the wreath.
And tie your apron around him,
The fine apron from Serge.”

“Besides this, give him two small jugs,
Two small jugs so bright and shiny
And send him to get some water,
Send him to get some drinking water.”

The loved one put on her lover
Put on him the green coat,
She gave her lover
Her Luendisch coat.

She put on his head
Her lace trimming with the wreath
And sent him to get water
Sent him to get drinking water.

“And should there be washer women
Washing their clothes white,
Don’t let them recognize you,
You my most loved one.”

The washer women who were staying there
Noticed the girl.
“Tell us, whose are you, girl
That you wear those sharp spurs?”

“Yes, spurs on your boots
And on the side that sharp sword?
You really are no girl at all,
Surely you are the girl’s lover.”
