A. 147. The Evil Mother

(From Wawiz)
Translated by H. Melvin Symmank

Saddle the little steed, my little brother, for me,
Yes, saddle us both also.

Let us ride there to Schandau,
To Schandau, the new town.

No one came out to him from there,
Except a single old little mother.

"Welcome, welcome, you two lads,
You lads from a distant land"

"Come to us now at supper,
You lads from a distant land."

'(We) will not go to you for supper,
Before we have spoken with the maid.'

"(You) will not speak any more with the maid,
As she has died."

"Today is just now a year and a day,
Since we have taken her to the grave."

"Where with two students carried (her) there,
Covered with black cloth."

The lads turned their steeds around,
(And) rode on from there to the cemetery.

'God help you, God help you, young maid,
My beloved, so help you God."

'Now tell me, Oh my maid,
Why you have died on me?'

'Did you then die on account of me,
Did you die on account of you?'

"No, I did not die on account of you,
I did not die on account of me."

"I died on account of my mother,
My old mother.'

"She gave me a little apple,
A beautiful white and red apple."

"Outwardly it was beautiful white and red,
But inside filled with poison."

"I had to eat the apple,
Truly before her face"

"Then I died soon thereafter
Truly in her sight."

The lads turned their steeds
And rode away from the cemetery.

The steed started to neigh with joy,
The lad (started) to cry very sorrowfully.
