A. 290. Aria, the Child Murderer

Translated by Ed Bernthal

Aria, the beautiful young woman
Went out for water on Sunday morning.

She met an old man
An old gray haired man.

‘O daughter, lovely daughter
Let me drink some of your water.’

“I would gladly let you have a drink,
But look, the water is not clean.”

“It is clouded all over with dust,
It is all covered with leaves.”

‘The water surely is clear and clean,
You are an unclean [Censored].’

“That you will have to prove to me,
That I am an unclean [Censored].”

‘That I will prove to you:
Go to the church in Kranz early Sunday morning.’

The beautiful young women Aria went
To the church in Kranz early that Sunday morning.

All the grass dried up on her way,
After her there was a track of blood.

When she came to the cemetery,
She met nine children.

Nine children, yes nine sons,
Nine young sons without heads.

‘O Mother, our dear Mother
You are always going in Kranz.’

‘You go in Kranz and burn in hell
Burn in hell, serve the devil.’

‘Nine sons you have killed
And chopped of all their heads.’

‘Nine you cut off their heads
And are thinking of doing the same to the tenth.’

“O children, my dear children
Forgive me my sins.”

‘We will gladly forgive you
But God will not forgive you.’

Then she went into the church
And sprinkled herself with holy water.

After that she went to the altar,
Where she humbly kneeled down.

She made the sign of the holy cross,
Then O, she suddenly disappeared.

Nothing else was to be seen of her,
Nothing else but her yellow hair.
