B. 027. The Abandoned Children

(from Burk)
Translated by H. Melvin Symmank

The boy watered his horse,
The maiden cried so pitiful.

' Tell me, girl, why are you crying?’
"Why should I not cry, not be sad!”

"Father went from me deep into Poland,
There far in Hungry is my mother.”

"All the children are yet so small,
Only up to girdle high, cute and fine.”

"Just as the raspberries they are small,
As the Kalinken cute and fine.”

There is no music for this song.

Note: Kalinka, Viburnum opulus, is a species of flowering plant in the family Adoxaceae (formerly Caprifoliaceae) native to Europe, northern Africa and central Asia.
