Lord, save thy people, and bless thine inheritance; feed them also, and lift them up forever. Amen. ( Psalm 28:9)

Beloved in the Lord! The training of the children is in Holy Scriptures given over to the parents and the teachers. It is a precious Word of our Savior, which says; as the little children were brought to him that he might touch them, and his disciples wanted to hinder them. Then Jesus said to his disciples, who wanted to become teachers, Mark 10. thus “Let the little children come to me and hinder them not, for such are of the Kingdom of God”. The teachers should not hinder the parents, but encourage them to bring their children to Jesus. And the teachers should also be assistants of the parents, that the blessing they received would be preserved. Now the children come to Jesus, when they are brought to Holy Baptism, and there receive the blessing. But through teaching and training they are kept with Jesus.

The training of children, as was mentioned, first of all is entrusted to the parents! Abraham has the lasting praise, that he taught the Word of God to his children and family. Then God said, Genesis 18, 18-19. “All the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him. For I know that he will command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of the Lord and do what is right and good”

Moses taught the Children of Israel his song, which is recorded in Deuteronomy 32 and said to them, V. 46: “Set your hearts unto all the words which I testify among you this day, which ye shall command your children to observe to do, all the words of this law.”

And in the New Testament the fathers are addressed thus, Ephesians 6,4.“Ye fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath, but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.”

And to his Timothy, Paul writes, 2 Timothy 3, 15. “And that from a child thou hast known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise unto salvation through faith which is in Jesus Christ.”

How was it then that Timothy knew the Holy Scriptures from his childhood. Paul gives us the answer in 2 Timothy 1,5. “When I call to remembrance of the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which first dwelt in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also”. Timothy had a godly Grandmother and a godly Mother. He was raised well.

But not only to the parents, but also to the teachers the training of the children was entrusted by the Lord.

We do know that Jesus gave to Peter the twofold instructions: “Feed my lambs. Feed my sheep. From this we learn, that not only the feeding of the sheep, but also the feeding of the lambs belongs to the spiritual office, and not of the parents alone, but that the feeding of the lambs is also part of the spiritual office of the teacher.

And at the end of Matthew, Jesus said to the apostles: “And teach them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you!”. And whom are they to teach them everything that Jesus had commanded them? The context of the foregoing shows that the baptized ones should be taught everything that Jesus had commanded them. But the baptized ones which are in need of the Catechism teachings are, first of all, the children.

Therefore, Martin Luther said: “I would wish that nobody elected to be a pastor, would not first have been a school master. Nowadays, the young fellows all want to be, from young up, pastors, and avoid the school work. But when one has taught school, about ten years, he may with a good conscience quit, for the work is too much, and is held in low regard. But in a city, the school master carries as much responsibility as the pastor. And if I were not a pastor, I don’t know of any other profession on earth that I would not rather have. One must know that God accepts and praises it every day.”

So, like Luther, I have personally, as Pastor, taught school for over ten years! I did it out of necessity, since there was no teacher of our faith available, but the children could not grow up without a school. I have done it in great weakness, since I had no seminary training, I had to learn how to teach only by practice. I had few helpful materials. I had brought a little book along with me from Europe, from which, for several years, I had the beginners recite, till the first pages of the booklet fell apart. Only in the last years, did I receive the necessary school books from St.Louis. But now the time has come, when I can honorably give up our school and entrust it to a man of our faith.

Therefore, I turn to you, dear Brother in the Faith, Mr. Leubner, and trustingly give over to you the most precious treasure on earth of this Evangelical Lutheran Congregation, our dear children, along with my own children. The Lord Jesus is giving you today the instruction that he first gave to his disciple Peter: “Feed my lambs!”. For through Holy Baptism, our children became the lambs of Jesus. So we should pray for them and ask Jesus that they would be faithfully instructed and led to remain with their Lord, so that no one would be lost.

So may you, dear Brother, lead our children that they would gladly hear and learn God’s Word and for their preparation, which a well rounded person has to have in this world, receive what is most necessary.

You should during the school hours, and as you have opportunity otherwise, do that which the Bible assigns to the fathers, namely, to bring up the children.

The main verse about the training of the children was already mentioned Ephesians 6,4. “You fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath, but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.” To this we also add Colossians 3, 21. “Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, lest they be discouraged.”

From these two verses, the following rules for the school teacher are given.
1) The school teacher is, during the school hours, the representative of the parents. But parents dearly love their children. A school teacher should be like a father in the school, that is, he should sincerely love the children. Then the children will love him. Then what comes from the heart, goes to the heart.
2) He can not provoke the children to anger, nor embitter them. It may come, that the school teacher sometimes has to punish, and even use the rod. But when it becomes necessary for this, he should first search his heart and beware of what Psalm 4. 5 says: “For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God.” James 1, 20.

So he always has to be fair, that is, he may not have his favorites, to whom he gives much attention, over against others, whom he does not give attention. Through unfairness the children are mostly embittered.

But above all, 3) it is well to remember what Luther says in the Large Catechism in his explanation of the Second Commandment: “What one tries to achieve alone with the rod and spanking, will not bring good results, and if one continues to do it, those who get the rod on their backs will no longer be godly”.

Lovingly, he who first learns to pray by the Spirit, works better than by spanking. Therefore St. Paul tells the fathers and the teachers: “Do not provoke your children to wrath, don’t embitter them, so that they won’t be discouraged”.

But he also says: “But bring them up in nurture and admonition of the Lord”. Now how does this happen! Answer;
1) So that the teacher faithfully presents to the children their Savior in his works and words as their Lord, who has redeemed them and who asks for their obedience.
2) That the teacher at all times lets his whole manner impress the children, that he is also under the Lord, and is not his own Lord, as Paul says 2 Corinthians 4, 5. “For we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord; and ourselves your servants for His sake”

In short, the school teacher should not only teach and direct the school children, but also be an example for them.

Finally, I still have to make my sincere request of the whole congregation, that they cordially receive their new teacher, and at all times, judge him in love and consideration, that nothing is ever torn down in the home that had been built up in the school. If members of the congregation speak in an unloving way about their teacher, the love of the children for their teacher will be torn out of their hearts and much damage will be done. May our faithful God protect us from this!

And especially, may our Wends not suffer from this, that our teacher is German. Remember that I worked in the school for nine years under German and had to learn the German and other languages. But I had in no way forgotten my Wendish mother tongue. It would be for their credit and their good when the Wends would now thoroughly learn the German language, and also to commit themselves to speak German in their homes, rather than trying to protect themselves from any higher education than their mother tongue.

Now the God of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the Sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant, make you perfect in every good work to do his will, working in you that is well pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ; to whom be glory forever and ever. Geliebte in dem Herrn! Die Erziehung der Kinder ist in der heiligen Schrift den Eltern und den Lehrern aufgetragen. Es ist im köstliches Wort unseres Heilandes, welches er sagt; als man Kindlein zu ihn brachte, daβ er sie anruhrete, und seine Junger wollten ihren wahren. Da sprach Jesus zu seinen Jungern, die ja Lehrer werden sollten, Markus am 10. also: „Laβt die Kindlein zu mir kommen und wehret ihnen nicht denn solches ist das Reich Gottes.“ Die Lehrer sollen den Eltern nicht wahren, sondern sie dazu aufmuntern, daβ sie ihre Kindlein zu Jesu bringen. Und die Lehrer sollen auf Mithelfer des Elern sein daβ den Kindern der empfangene Segen bewahret werde. Jetzt kommen die Kinder zu Jeβu, wenn sie zur heiligen Taufe gebracht werden, und empfangen da den Segen. Durch die Lehre aber und durch Erziehung werden sie bei Jeßu erhalten.

Die Erziehungder Kinder nun, wie gesagt, zuerst den Eltern befohlen! Abraham hat den ewigen Ruhm, daß er seine Kinder und sein Haus Gottes Wort gelehret hat. Dann Gott sagt 1 Mos. 18, 18 – 19: „Alle Völker auf Erden sollen in ihm gesegnet werden. Denn ich weiß, er wird befehlen seinen Kindern under seinem Hause nach ihm, daß sie des Herrn Wege halten und thun, was recht und gut ist.“

Moses lehrte die Kinder Israel sein Lied, welches im 5ten Buch Mose 32 aufgeschrieben stehet, und sagte zu ihnen V. 46: „Nehmet zu Harzen alle Worte, die ich euch heute bezeuge, daß ihr euren Kindern befehlet, daß sie halten und thun alle Worte dieses Gesetzes.“

Und im Neuen Testament werden die Väter Ephes. 6,4. also angeredet: „Ihr Väter, reizet eure Kinder nicht zum Zorn, sondern ziehet sie auf in der Zucht und Vermahnung zum Herrn.

Und seinem Timotheus schreibt Paulus 2 Timoth 3, 15. „Weil du von Kind auf die heilige Schrift weißest, kann dich dieselbige unterweisen zur Seligkeit durch den glauben an Christus Jesu.“

Wir kam es denn, daß Timotheus die heiligen Schrift von Kind aus wußte? Darüber gibt uns Paulus Auskunft, der er 2 Timoth. 1,5. schreibt: Ich erinnere mich als ungefärbten, Glaubens in dir, welcher zuvor gewohnt hat in deiner Großmutter Louise und in deiner Mutter Eunike, bin aber gewiß, das auch in dir“ Timotheus hatte eine fromme Großmutter und eine fromme Mutter gehabt. Er war daher gut erzogen.

Aber nicht bloß den Eltern sondern auch den Lehrern ist die Erziehung der Kinder vom Herrn aufgegeben.

Wir wißen ja, daß Jesus seinem Junger Petrus Joh. 21 den zwiefachen Auftrag gegeben hat: „Weide meine Lämmer. Weide meine Schafe.“ Daraus erhellet daß nicht bloß das Weiden der Schafe, sondern und das Weiden der Lämmer dem geistlichen Amte zukommt und nicht den Eltern allein, und daß also das Weiden der Lämmer das Schulamt, ein Theil das geistlichen Amtes ist.

Und Matthäi am letzten sprach Jesus zu allen seinen Aposteln: „Und lehret sie halten, was ich euch befollen habe!“ Und wen sollten sie lehren alles halten, was Jeßus befollen hat? Der Zusammenhang mit dem Vorigen zeigt an, daß sie die Getauften lehren sollten alles halten, was Jeßus befohlen hat. Die Getauften aber, jetzt die solcher Catechismus lehre bedurfen, sind jetzt am allerersten die Kinder.

Darum spricht Dr. Martin Luther: „Ich wollte, daß keiner zu einem Prediger erwählet würder, er wäre denn zu vor ein Schulmeister gewesen. Jetzt wollen die jungen Gesellen von Stund an alle Prediger werden und fliehen der Schulen Arbeit. Aber wenn einer hat Schule gehalten, ungefähr zehn Jahre, so mag er mit gutem Gewißen davon lassen, dem die Arbeit ist zu groß und man hält sie geringe. Es ist aber so viel in einer Stadt an einem Schulmeister gelegen, als am Pfarrherrn. Und wenn ich kein Prediger wäre, so weiß ich keinen Stand auf Erden, den ich lieber haben wollte. Man muß es Gott achtet und an jenem Tage rühmen wird.“

So weil Luther. Ich. für meine Person habe nun als Pastor über 10 Jahre auch Schule gehalten! Ich habe es nothgedrungen gethan, weil kein Schullehrer unseres Glaubens da war und doch die Kinder nicht ohne Schule aufwachsen durften. Ich habe es gethan in großer Schwachkeit, weil ich kein Seminarbildung hatte und das Schulehalten erst durch Urbung lernen mußten. Ich hatte auch wenig hülfsmittel. Ein kleines Büchlein hatte ich mir Europa mitgebracht, aus dem ich die Anfänger einzeln Jahre fang aufsagen ließ, bis die ersten Blatter des Büchleins zerfielen. Erst in den letzten Jahren erhielt ich die nöthigsten Schulbücher aus St. Louis. Nun aber ist die Zeit gekommen, wo ich die hiesige Schule in Ehren abgeben und einem Manne meines Glaubens anvertrauen kann.

Darum wende ich mich nun an Sie, lieber Glaubensbruder, Herr Leubner, und übergebe Ihnen vertrauensvoll den theuersten Erden, schatz diester evangelichs lutherischen Gemeinde, ihre leiben Kinder sammt meinen eigenen Kindern. Der Herr Jesus gibt ihnen heute den Auftrag, den er einst seinem Junger Petrus gab: Weide meine Lämmer! Denn durch die Heiligen Taufe sind unsere Kinder Jesu Lämmer geworden. Sie sollen für sie und Jesu ihnen beten uns sie treulich unterrichten in leiten damit sie bei ihren Herrn bleiben, auf daß keines verloren gehe.

Sie sollen, lieber Bruder, unsere Kinder dazu anleiten, daß sie Gottes Wort gerne hören und lernen und von den fertigkeiten, die ein wohlgebildeter Mensch in dieser Welt haben muß, das Nöthigste sich aneignen.

Sie sollen aber auch in den Schulstunden und so weil sie sonst Gelegenheit haben, das thun, was in der Bibel den Vätern aufgegeben ist, nämlich die Kinder erziehen.

Der Hauptspruch von der Kinderzucht ist der schon angeführte Ephes. 6,4. „Ihr Väter, reizet eure Kinder nicht zum Zorn, sondern ziehet sie auf in der Zucht und Vermahnumg zum Herrn.“ Dazu nehmen wir auch. Koloß. 3, 21; wo geschrieben sehet: „ Ihr Väter, erbittert eure Kinder nicht, auf daß sie nicht scheu werden.“

Aus diesen beiden Schriftstellen ergeben sich folgende Regeln für den Schullehrer.

1) Ein Schullehrer ist in den Schulstunden Stellvertreter der Väter. Väter aber haben ihr Kinder herzlich lieb. Ein Schullehrer soll also in der Schule wie ein Vater sein d. H. er soll die Kinder herzlich lieb haben. Dann werden die Kinder ihn wieder lieb haben. Dann was vom Herzen kommt das geht zum Herzen.
2) Er darf die Kinder nicht zum Zorne reizen, nicht erbittern. Es kam kommen, daß der Schullehrer einmal strafen und auch wohl die Ruthe gebrauchen muß. Aber wenn er ja einmal dazu genöthiget ist, so soll er vorher mit seinem Herzen reden auf seinem Lager und harren, wie der 4te Psalm v. 5 besagt. „ Denn das Menschen Zorn thut nicht, was vor Gott recht ist.“ Jac. 1,20.

Sodann soll er allezeit gerecht, sein, d.h. er darf nicht seine Lieblinge haben, denen er viel übersieht, und wieder Andere, denen er nichts übersieht. Durch Ungerechtigkeit werden die Kinder am meisten erbittert.

Ueberhaupt ist 3) wohl zu bedenken, was Luther in großen Katachismus in der Auslegung das zweiten Gebots sagt: „Was man allein mit Ruthen und Schlägen soll zwingen, da wird keine gute Art aus, und wenn man’s weit bringet, so bleiben sie doch nicht länger fromm, denn die Ruthe auf dem Nacken
liegt.“

Liebevoller Erst, den nur der Geist das Gebets lehrt, wirkt beßer als öftere Schläge. Darum sagt Paulus den Vätern und den Lehrern: „Reizet eure Kinder nicht zum Zorn, erbittert sie nicht, auf daß sie nicht scheu werden.“

Er sagt aber auch: „Sondern ziehet sie auf in der Zucht und Vermahnung zum Herrn.“

Wie geschicht nun das! Anwort: 1) „So, daß der Lehrer den Kindern den Herrn Jesum, ihren heiland in seinen Werken und Worten als ihren Herrn, der sie erlöset hat und ihren Gehorsam fordert, fleißig vorstelle und 2) daß der Lehrer die Kinder allezeit an seiner ganzen Haltung werken laße, daß auch er unter ihrem Herrn stehe und nicht sein eigner Herr sei, wie Paulus sagt 2 Kor. 4,5. „Wir predigen nicht uns selbst, sondern Jeßum Christ, daß er der Herr sei, wir aber eure Knechte um Jeßu willen!

Kurz, ein Schullehrer soll seine Schulkinder nicht bloß lehren und unter weisen, sondern ihnen auch vorleben.

Zuletzt habe ich an die ganze Gemeinde noch die herzliche bitte zu richten, daß sie ihren neuen Lehrer freundlich aufnehme und allezeit mit Liebe und Nachsicht beurtheile, damit einmals in einem Hause niedergerissen werde, was die Schule aufbaut. Wenn Gemeindeglieder vor den Kindern lieblos über den Lehrer reden, so wird damit den Kindern die Liebe zum Lehrer aus ihren Herzen, gerißen und viel Unheil gestiftet. Davor behüte die Gemeinde der treue Gott!

Es möge aber besonders auch die Liebe der Wenden nicht dadurch leiden, daß unser Lehrer Deutsch ist. Bedanket daß ich neun Jahre auf Schulen bloß unter Deutschen gewesen bin und die Deutsche Sprache und andere Sprachen gelernt habe. Ich habe dadurch meine Wendische Muttersprache doch keinesweges verlernet. Es wird den Wenden mehr zum Ruhme und zum Nutzen gereichen wenn sie jetzt die Deutsche Sprache grundlich lernen und auch in ihren Häusern sich das Deutschsprechen sich befleißigen, als wenn sie mit ihrer Muttersprache sich gegen alle höhere Bildung verschanzen wollten.

Gott aber das Friedens, der von den Todten ausgeführet hat den großen Hirten der Schafe, durch das Blut des ewigen Testaments, unsern Herrn Jesum, der mache euch fertig in allem guten Werk zu thun seinen Willen und schaffe in euch was vor ihm gefällig ist, durch Jesum Christ, welchem sei Ehre von Ewigkeit zu Ewigkeit. Amen (Hebr. 13,20.21.)
