We have called ___________________ to be a teacher in this parish and have subsequently submitted to him the



We pledge to him on the confession of faith of our evangelical Lutheran church, which are the three old main symbols of Christendom, on the Augsburg Confession and its Apology on the Smalcald Articles and both Lutheran Catechisms, on the Formula of Corcord and the Inspection Articles* as if on a true and faithful statement of the word of God. We entrust our children who attend the school to him and for him to instruct them in the true word of God and in other obligatory basic knowledge as far as possible. Also, he is to handle school discipline and in general as far as his office gives him the opportunity to do so, for the secular and everlasting welfare of the children entrusted to him with heartfelt concerns, to be responsible for the execution of the choir and organ playing at the church and to punctually take care of everything which is submitted to him under the direction and supervision of the Pastor and the School Board. We are expecting him to create a true Christian and blessed change throughout the entire Parish and to be a shining lamp in front of every relationship.

It is going to be particularly required of him that he play the organ and be familiar with local manners of singing because he will have to direct and lead public worship services and funerals and be accommodating to all.

Also, it will be expected of him to be able and willing to teach both mornings and afternoons as long as choir service at the church does not hinder him and to instruct not only in the German language, but also in the English language.

Considering that the local parish consists mostly of Wends it is essential that the choir read Wendish. Also, it will be required that religious instruction is given in the Wendish language. For that reason all religious instruction will be handled by the pastor at this time.

By comparison we are promising him not only free housing but also the obligatory maintenance, along with the love and esteem of our youth for him as teacher and tutor. The students will furnish him with respect and be responsible.

His merit and strength in these ways should become certain, that he himself should be in good standing in the school and in conducting the choir. In addition, this much can be affirmed in advance, that the annual salary from the school should amount to at least $300 and his annual earnings for conducting the choir should amount to approximately $100.

In his capacity he should receive for every student an annual $6 and have approximately an annual $100 in earnings for his choir service from the church. We will insure that during the year he will always have not less than fifty students for instruction and that part of his earnings directing the choir will certainly come from free will offerings and partly from stipulated fees for his services at baptisms, weddings, and funerals.

For relocation expenses we want to either reimburse him upon his arrival in Serbin or for the amount he is going to need for the trip by indicating to us in writing the amount to send.

The good shepherd, who has said, “The pasture of my little lambs,” gives his blessings to all. Amen.

* The document referred to is relatively little known in our day and apparently did not exist in only one form. The term "Inspection Articles" was a collection of affirmations (Kirchenordnung) by which an ecclesiastical supervisor could judge whether a congregation was faithful to the standards of the Lutheran Reformation or had been tainted to some degree by Reformed or other theology. In the first century of Lutheranism, several of the German provinces produced one of these, including the Saxons. In the call document it is listed as though it were one of the Lutheran Confessions, which it is not, but it was a standard for Lutherans neverthless. - Ray Martens

Nachdem wir Herrn __________ zum Lehrer an der hiesigen Gemeinde berufen haben, überreichen wir ihm die



Wir verpflichten ihn auf die Bekenntnißschriften unserer ev. lutherischen Kirche, d. i. auf die alten drei Hauptsymbole der Christenheit, auf die Augsburgische Confession und deren Apologie, auf die Schmalkaldischen Artikel und die beiden Katechismen Luthers, auf die Concordienformel und die Visitationsartikel als auf eine ungefälschte und getreue Darlegung des Wortes Gottes. Wir tragen ihm auf, die Kinder, welche die Schule besuchen, mit aller Treue im Worte Gottes und andern nöthigen Elementarwissen-schaften, so weit möglich, zu unterrichten, christliche Schulzucht zu handhaben und überhaupt, so weit ihm sein Amt dazu Gelegenheit gibt, für das zeitliche und ewige Wohl der ihm anvertrauten Kinder herzliche Sorge zu tragen, die Verrichtung des Cantordienstes bei der Kirche zu übernehmen und pünktliche zu besorgen und in allem dem, sich der Leitung und Beaufsichtigung des Pastors und des Schulvorstandes zu unterwerfen. Wir erwarten von ihm, daß er die ganze Gemeinde durch einen wahrhaft christlichen und gottseligen Wandel erbaue und ihr in jeder Beziehung voranleuchte.

Es wird insbesondere von ihm gefordert, daß er die Orgel spiele und in die hiesige Weise des Gesanges, den er beim öffentlichen Gottesdienste und bei Beerdigungen zu leiten haben wird, sich zu finden und zu schicken wisse.

Auch wird von ihm erwartet, daß er im Stande und willig sei, den Schulunterricht Vormittags und Nachmittags, so oft der Cantordienst bei der Kirche ihn nicht davon hindert, zu ertheilen und nicht bloß die Deutsche, sondern auch die Englische Sprache zu lehren.

Da aber die hiesige Gemeinde dem allergrößten Theile nach Wendisch ist, so ist unerläßlich, daß der Cantor Wendisch lesen könne. Auch wird verlangt, daß der Religionsunterricht in Wendischer Sprache ertheilt werde. Darum müßte vor der Hand den Religionsunterricht der Pastor ertheilen.

Dagegen versprechen wir ihm nicht nur freie Wohnung und den nöthigen Unterhalt, sondern auch, daß wir ihn als den Lehrer und Erzieher unserer Jugend lieb und werth halten und ihm mit der schuldigen Ehrerbietung zuvorkommen wollen.

Sein Gehalt soll in der Weise bestimmt werden, daß er sich um so besser stehe, je besser er seine Schule hält und seinen Cantordienst verrichtet. Doch kann so viel im voraus versichert werden, daß aus dem Schulgelde jährlich wenigstens 300 Dollars Specie oder Specienwerth herauskommen werden und daß seine Einnahme vom Cantordienste ungefähr Ein Hundert Dollars Specie jährlich betragen wird.

Sein Gehalt soll darin bestehen, daß er für jedes Schulkind von den Eltern desselben jährlich 6 Dollars Specie Schulgeld bekommen und von dem Cantordienste bei der Kirche ungefähr Ein Hundert Dollars Specie jährliche Einnahme habe, indem wir versichern, daß er mindestens Fünfzig Schulkinder allezeit zu unterrichten haben wird und daß er seine Einnahme vom Cantordienste theils in bestimmten freien Opfern theils festgesetzten Gebühren für seinen Dienst bei Taufen, Trauungen u. Begräbnissen beziehen soll.

Das Reisegeld wollen wir ihm entweder nach seiner Ankunft in Serbin erstatten oder die Summe, die er zur Reise brauchen wird und die er uns briefliche anzugeben hat, vorher im „Wechsel“ zusenden.

Der gute Hirte, der gesagt hat „Weide meine Lämmer“ gebe zu Allem seinen Segen. Amen.
