Thoughts at the ground-breaking of the new church at Rabb’s Creek, Fayette County, Texas

on April 25, 1873.

“Take off your shoes from your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground”. Thus the Lord our God once spoke to Moses in the land of Midian, in the desert by Mr. Horeb, as he was called to lead the Children of Israel out of Egypt. Exodus 3.

Dear Brothers!

This place should for us today be holy ground which the Lord has designated for us from eternity to break ground on April 25, 1873 to become a church and a school.

We now have the joy that, with God’s help, we could carry this out, and this especially on a Friday as the great day of our salvation by our highly praised Savior. We want to begin this only to the honor of the Triune God and for our, as well as our children’s, salvation, and, through His grace, bring it to fulfillment. And once the church is finished, we would gather here to hear the Word of God, to find comfort in all of our troubles. To achieve this, may the Lord provide for us and those to follow our first pastor and teacher. May they be strengthened mightily through the Holy Spirit.

We will bring our newborn children here so that they may be received in the Kingdom of Grace through Holy Baptism. We will send them to school here, which was not possible for us up to this time, so that they may learn to know the love-filled heart of the Savior for poor sinners. And that they may be prepared for Confirmation, and that they with us, could receive the benefit of Holy Communion for the forgiveness of sins. This is a pledge and nourishment on our pilgrimage through the desert till we will lay to rest one after the other next to our church. God grant that here they will surely rise for eternal life. For this we can thank Him already on this day.

Let us then begin this work in Christian brotherly love and unity. May we courageously overcome all obstacles. And may we pray for God’s fatherly assistance to protect us from all dangers during this construction. And may He grant us health, strength, means and materials, all this for His glory and for our salvation. Amen.

Zeuch deine Schuhe aus von deinen Füssen, denn der Ort, da du darauf stehest is heilig Land. So sprach einst der Herr unser Gott zu Mose im Lande Midian in der Wüste an den Berg Horab, als er berufen wurde die Kinder Israel aus Egipten zu führen. 2 Mose 3

Geliebten Brüder!

Auch dieser Ort soll heute für uns ein heiliges Land sein, welches Gott von Ewigkeit her, dazu bestimt hat, das hier am 25ten April 1873 der Grund zu einer Kirche u. Schule gelegt werden soll.

Wir haben nun die Freude das wir solches mit Gottes hilfe ausführen könen, und zwar von einem Freitags als von den grossen Tag das u. Erlösungs Tage unseres hochgelobten Heilands, den nur zur Ehre des dreieinigen Gottes und unser und uneren Kinder Seligkeit wollen wir solches anfangen, und durch seine Gnade auch vollbringen. Und wenn die Kirche einmal fertig ist, so werden wir uns hier versameln um Gottes Wort zu hören, und Trost in jedlicher Noth zu suchen, und ihn auch gewiss erlangen, dazu wolle der Herr auch unserem nächsten ankommenden Pastor u. Lehrer als sein ersten eingan umbringen, S. durch seinen Hl. Geist mächtig stärken.

Wir werden unsere neugebornene Kindlein hierher bringen das sie durch die heil. Taufe in sein Gnadenbund aufgenommen warden. Wir werden sie hierher zu Schule schicken, was viele von uns jetzt nicht möglich war, das sie das liebevolle Herz des Heilands zu den armen Sündern kennen lernen, und das sie vorbereitet werden zu ihrer Confirmation das sie dan mit uns das Heil. Abendmal geniesen könen zur Vergebung der Sünden, welches ist ein Pfand und Zehrgfaming auf unserer Pilger Reise durch die Wüste, bis wir hier neben unseren Kirche einen nach dem andern zur ruhe geben warden. Gott gebe das hier freilich zum Ewigen Leben auferstehen, und ihm auch für den heutigen Tag danken können.

Lasst uns deshalb in Christbrüderlichen Liebe und Einigkeit ans Werke gehen, alle hindernisse mutig überwinden, und Gott um seinen Beistand bitten, er wolle uns von allen Gefahren bei diesen Baue vaterlich bewahren, uns Gesundheit, Kraft, Mittel u. Vermagen verleihen, solches alles zu seiner Ehre u. unsere Seligkeit.
