Dearest Aunt!

In several days, a great, precious, and dear family celebration will take place again in our midst. I am sincerely happy that you have reached this in good health. My heartfelt prayer here from this long distance is that the dear Lord, for this great celebration, would let you experience many more with good health and happiness.

When I think of it, dear Aunt, how you kept me with such care and love so that I was protected from all the evil of bad company. How many words did it cost you regarding my naughtiness and my stubbornness? How many worries and sorrows did I cause you and your dear father? So now, the tears run down my cheeks and I must give you my sincere apology. But at the same time, I can also say that the lessons fell on good soil and have taken root. Since, already in my twelve year, I was absolutely determined not to fall in with the life of evildoers, but live in the world as an upright person. If you think about it, how at this age, I was looking for and found friends, then I have to say that all that time I took your lessons to heart, so that I could withstand the raw lifestyle of my friends. On the contrary, as I was determined then to be more and more rooted in the decision in regard to the roughness of the sailors and of my playmates (which I had the best opportunity to observe in the Elbe Street at Moeller’s woods) always also the gang spirit, and then put it in the light of my soul. In this way, I gained the experience to get a basic insight into their worldly life and activity, and, thanks to God, so mostly have taken up and retained the good from which I now also derive my guiding principles for living.

But whom do I have to thank for this character that only wishes to do what is good? It is you and your dear father who never failed to guide me and always had the best for me in mind. Oh, how I would love to be able on this your anniversary of your birthday to be able to personally bring you my appreciation and thank you with a kiss. But that will have to wait till next year. So I will ask the good Lord, my dear Aunt, that He would crown your age with good health, and that you can celebrate, healthy and happy, many more in this world.

Theure Tante!

Um einigen Tagen, tritt wieder ein grossartiges, theures u. liebes Familienfest in unserer Mitte und ich freue mich herzlich, das du wieder gesund ereicht hast, mein unbrünstig Gebet hier in weiter Ferne ist – das der Liebe Gott möchte dir dieses uns so theures Fest, noch recht viele Male mit guther Gesundheit u. Zufriendenheit erleben hast.

Wenn ich dan denke, liebe Tante, mit welcher Sorgfalt und Liebe du mich vor jeder Schlechtigkeit grosen Umgang gehütet hast, wie viele Wörter dir meine Unarten und Wiedergangdigkeiten gekostet, wie viele Sorgen und Kummer ich dir und den lieben Vater bereitet habe, so laufen mir die Thränen längst den Backen und ich mus euch herzlich Abbiten thun – aber zugleich darf ich auch sagen, die Lehren sind auf guten Boden gefallen und Wurzel geschlagen. Denn schon in meinen zwölften Lebensjahr hatte ich mir unumstöslich festgesetzt nich im Wandel der Strolche hinein zufallen, sondern als ehrlichen Mensch durch die Welt zu wandeln. Wenn man bedenke welchen Umgang ich immer in diesen Alter gesucht und gefunden habe,so darf ich auch sagen, das ich damals schon eure Lehren beherzigt habe, so das mir diese rohe treiben meiner Collegan garnichts anhaben konnte. J im Gegenteil, als ich mir zum Vortheil gewesen, dann immer fester und fester wurzelte in mir der Entschlus nicht in die Roheiten der Seelüte und meiner Spielkommeraden, (welche ich die beste Gelegenheit hatte, in der Elbstrasse auf Möller’s Holslager zu beobachten), immer auch auf die Gangschale und hielt sie dann vons Licht meiner Seele; auf dieser Weise habe ich mir nur Erfahrung gesammelt, einen gründlichen Einblik in das menschlige Leben und Treiben gehabt und Gott sei dank, so ziemlich stehts das Gute aufgenommen und behalten, wonach ich dann auch jetzt meines Lebens Richtschnur ziehe.

Aber wem danke ich diesen Charakter, der mir das Gute wünscht und möchte? Dir und den lieben Vater, der ihr als nie an Lehren habt fehlen lasen und die ihr mir das Gute mit mir im Sinn hatten, Oh, wie gern möchte ich dir heute, an deiner Jahretage, den lieben Geburtstag, mündlich mein dank darbringen und dir mit einem Kus danken, aber da ich hiermit noch bis nächsten Jahr warten mus, so will ich den lieben Gott bitten, das er dir, meine liebe Tante, dein Alter mit guhter Gesundheit krönen möge, auf das wir es hier in diesem Land, noch recht viele Mal gesund und vergnügt feiern könen.
