Dear Steckfuss:

Enclosed (we) send over to you from the Mission Commission of the Texas District the Call to Battle, Waco, Marlin (and) Mart. Pastor Falsken has served this position up to now and it has become vacant through his transfer to Abilene, (and) now is an absolutely important position. There is first of all at Battle, a good prospect of growth for a churchly connection. According to the last report the amount of the congregation in Battle is 50 souls, 26 communicants and 17 school children. A school house is available and just for the sake of the school, from October until Easter should be held regularly. It is noteworthy that the Missionary’s place of residence in Battle (is an) extra charge. Waco, a town of 30,000 inhabitants, is already important enough, that we fill this position as soon as possible and operate it with all diligence and zeal. Pastor Falsken preached in Waco every 2 weeks in the Evangelical Lutheran Norwegian Church and has 37 souls and 21 communicants, who regularly hold themselves to us. In the months when the Battle School is not in session, Waco should be thoroughly be explored and searched out. That is next to the School in Battle, to be the chief baptismal yield for the Missionary. Mr. Geissler, the father-in-law of Pastor Behnken, now lives in Waco and it is very important to him that the mission in Waco be vigorously perused. Near Battle and Waco is also the third place that this position also is lifting up, Marlin, the County Seat of Falls County, a budding town. It seems to me that the town is growing and has much to gain. The small congregation which is operated by us, contains 22 souls and 18 communicants. Mart, to this point an unimportant and unimpressive preaching station with 7 souls and 6 communicants should be served by us, at least as long as it possible, since the souls themselves are available who seek after our services. The work in all these places is carried out in the German language, yet it is also quite possible that later, in addition to the German, the English language must be brought. Though Pastor Falsken presented the outspoken request to us, no beginning description of this has been given to his request to this point and Pastor Studtmann’s answer, which we finally will undertake, yet we are not there yet, so we decided, to wait no longer and to send you the Call without delay. Because the School in Battle, the matter already has need of great haste. Pastor Falsken had, as he conferred with Pastor Fischer, accepted the call to Abilene, Pastor Beyer’s mission request, and will be installed in Abilene on Sunday.

Now may we request of you, to recognize the enclosed Call as Godly and important and to make your decision as soon as possible. You are truly suitable for the afore mentioned important request, (you) have the Gift and missionary experience and you see the need, the preacher shortage, with which we in Texas have always struggled. Shortly the Lord make your heart inclined to accept this Call. Should you desire to know more of the vicinity of the afore mentioned places, so turn at a time to spare, contact Pastor Studtmann, as he has served in all the previously mentioned places. Lieber Streckfuss!

Anbei übersendet Dir die Missionskommission des Texasdistricts den Beruf für Battle, Waco, Marlin, Mart. Dies Gebiet, bisher von P. Falsken bedient und durch dessen Versetzung nach Abilene vakant geworden, ist ein durchaus wichtiges Gebiet. Da ist zunächst Battle, welches gute Aussicht auf Wachsthum hat in kirchlicher Beziehung, laut letzten Berichts ist der Bestand der Gemeinde in Battle 50 Seelen 26 Kommunikanten u. 17 Schulkinder; ein Schulhaus ist vorhanden und gerade um der Schule willen, die von October bis zu Ostern regelmäßig gehalten werden sollte, ist es nöthig, daß der Missionar in Battle seinen Wohnsitz aufschlage. Waco, eine Stadt von 30000 Einwohnern, ist schon allein wichtig genug, daß wir dies Gebiet baldmöglichst besetzen und mit allen Fleiß und Eifer bedienen. P. Falsken predigte in Waco alle 2 Wochen in der ev. luth. Norwegerkirche u. hatte 37 Seelen u. 21 Kommunikanten, die sich regelmäßig zu uns hielten. In den Monaten, wo in Battle die Schule nicht im Gange sein wird, sollte Waco gründlich explorirt u. durchforscht werden; das wird nächst der Schule in Battle die Hauptaufgabe des Missionars sein. Herr Geissler, der Schwiegervater von P. Behnken, wohnt jetzt in Waco u. es ist ihm sehr viel daran gelegen, daß in Waco die Mission kräftig betrieben werde. Neben Battle u. Waco ist als dritter Platz dieses Gebiets hervorzuheben Marlin, County Seat von Falls Co., eine aufblühende Stadt. Die Stadt wächst bedeutend und hat viel Zuzug. Das Gemeindlein, welches von uns bedient wird, zählt 22 Seelen u. 18 Kommunikanten. Mart, ein jetzt noch unbedeutender u. unscheinbarer Predigtplatz mit 7 Seelen u. 6 K., sollte von uns wenigstens so lange regelmäßig bedient werden als noch Seelen daselbst vorhanden, die unseres Dienstes begehren. Die Arbeit an all diesen Plätzen geschieht in deutscher Sprache, doch ist leicht möglich, daß später neben der deutschen auch die englische Sprache gebraucht werden muß. Da P. Falsken trotz ausgesprochener Bitten uns keine eingehende Beschreibung seines bisherigen Gebiets gegeben u. P. Studtmann’s Antwort, den wir zuletzt darum ersuchten, noch nicht da ist, so beschlossen wir, nicht länger zu warten u. Dir den Beruf ohne Verzug zuzusenden. Schon wegen der Schule in Battle hat die Sache große Eile. P. Falsken hat, wie er P. Fischer mittheilte, den Beruf nach Abilene, P. Beyer’s Missionsgebiet, angenommen u. wird Sonntag in Abilene eingeführt werden.

Nun möchten wir Dich bitten, den ergangenen Beruf als göttlich u. wichtig zu erkennen u. baldmöglichst Deine Entscheidung zu treffen. Du bist ja für das besagte wichtige Gebiet wohl geeignet, hast die Begabung und Missionserfahrung u. Du siehst die Not, den Predigermangel, mit welchen wir in Texas immerfort zu kämpfen haben, kurz der Herr mache Dein Herz geneigt zur Annahme dieses Berufs. Solltest Du noch Näheres über die obgenannten Plätze wissen wollen, so wende, um Zeit zu sparen, Dich direkt an P. Studtmann, der ja sämmtliche Plätze früher gegründet u. bedient hat.
