B. 195. St George II

(From the men of Oertzen-Kollm)
Translated by John Buerfeind

Beyond the Wendish heather
Lies a nasty sea.
What is so nasty about it?
The gruesome dragon.

At one time it wanted to
Devour the entire city;
But the emperor said:
“I also have a daughter.”

“If she is selected
I will give her up.”
It looked over the situation,
And came upon the emperor‘s daughter.

The daughter left her room,
Went and said sadly:
“Fair well and live happily,
You, my dear old father.”

“God now calls for me,
I will also pray,
That I may return
Alive to speak to you.”

Then the daughter left the court,
Went and said sadly:
“Fair well and live happily.
Dear servants of the house.”

“God now calls for me,
I will also pray,
That I may return
Alive to speak to you.”

Then the daughter left the court,
Went and said sadly:
“Fair well and live happily.
Dear servants of the house.”

“God now calls for me,
I will also pray,
That I may return
Alive to speak to you.”

And the emperor’s daughter
Went down to the sea.
The gruesome dragon,
Swam toward the shore.

“Oh, St George
Come and help me!”
“Oh, dear maiden,
Do you believe in God?”

“Why, would I not
Believe in God
Who died for us,
And shed His blood for us?”

“Oh, dear maiden,
Unbuckle your belt,
And around the thick neck
Of the gruesome one, loop it.”

Around the thick neck,
Around the thick throat.
Then it was quartered
And loaded (on the wagon).

Harnessed to pull
Where forty horses,
But they could not
Move it from the spot.

They harnessed
An additional thirty horses,
And now they were barely able
To move it away.

They brought it, yes, they brought it
Over the bridges to Berlin,
On all the bridges in Berlin
They were shaking in horror.

All the people of Berlin
Were dying from terror,
All of Berlin’s children,
Jumped into the lake in fright.

Don’t be afraid, people!
It is not alive,
It is not alive,
But already quartered.
