Luther's "Christian Guide for Each Day"

Holy Pentecost Festival

And suddenly there came a roaring blast of wind from heaven ... and they were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to preach in other languages, as the Spirit enabled them to speak out.  Acts 2:2 and 4.

Upon this holy and joyful Festival of Pentecost we thank our dear Lord God for the great unending deed that He manifested upon earth, whereby He let His holy, beloved Word be revealed to us poor miserable humans. For upon this Day [Pentecost] the kingdom of Christ began. Christ of course in His Person already had His kingdom from eternity; however today on the Day of Pentecost it was revealed by the Holy Spirit through the Apostles to the entire world.  And such revealing occurred through the great boldness, defiance and joy of the wretched fishermen, the Apostles, who prior to this had out of fear denied and forsaken Christ. Nowadays, as the Holy Spirit comes with His roaring blast of wind blows on them, He makes their hearts so bold and their tongue so hallowed that everyone openly steps forth and preaches. Thus Christianity had its beginning with the words of poor fishermen and with the wretched and despised work of God, which is called: Jesus of Nazareth, hung on a cross. We should never ever forget this Pentecost sermon, rather constantly remember it and at all times thank God for it, that through the Holy Spirit it came to us from the Apostles, and that through His power it remains until the end of the world.  For if the Holy Spirit had not sustained it, we would know nothing about it, the devil would have ripped it away long ago and crushed it to the ground. Since however the Holy Spirit has continuously powerfully sustained it, the beloved Festival of Pentecost and its comforting, joyful Pentecost sermon has remained and comes to us. Even though many gangs and sects have positioned themselves against this and opposed it in order to uproot it and dampen it; they nevertheless were unable to suppress it or dampen it.  From whence then comes such power and might?  From none other than from Word and Spirit. Just look at what power Peter has! and not just Peter alone, but the rest of the Apostles too. May our beloved God and Father by His Holy Spirit sustain us with this Pentecost sermon, and grant us a thankful heart, in order that we thereby abide in Him, for the sake of Jesus Christ, our Lord.  Amen.

I don't know how much longer this old body will be able to function along with my demented mind.

In Christ,

Elmer H. pr. em.
