Luther's "Christian Guide for Each Day"

Thursday 23 May 2013 at 6:22 pm.

22 May

Your Word is my feet's lamp and a light upon my path. Psalm 119:105.

If this is true, as it most certainly is, then it must also be true that apart from God's Word all human teaching and wisdom, let it shine and glitter as beautifully and gloriously as it may, is sheer darkness. Reason is also a light and a beautiful one at that, however the foot and the path that tries to get out of sin and death and go to righteousness and life with reason, is unable to know or find it, but instead remains in darkness. Just like our candles are unable to lighten up heaven and earth, but only the narrow corners in our homes, however the sun is able to lighten up heaven, earth and everything, so likewise God's Word is also the true Sun Who gives us the eternal day in which to live and be happy. Blessed and happy is he who has a desire for it and gladly sees such a light, for it eagerly shines. But moles and bats, i.e. the world, are not eager to have it.

So ... there I managed to peck out another translation. If in any of you no longer wish to be on my sending list, let me know.

In Christ,

Elmer Hohle, Pr. em.
