To Honorable Pastor Johann Kilian
Serbin, Texas
Honorable Pastor!
Your worthy letter, dated February 17, 1869, was received on February 24. You have fulfilled my wish to my greatest satifaction regarding the matter
of my daughter’s marriage. I must therefore not fail to express my sincere thanks, as well as for your early report on the outcome of your efforts.
You might have wondered why I bothered you with this request. Permit me therefore to give you my reasons why I turned particularly to you.
The behavior of [...] against his wife during the previous year has caused me much sorrow and concern, especially because at that time he complained
to me about some unimportant pettiness against her, which you might say were not worth talking about. My concern was always that, if he continues with
this pettiness, it can keep on getting worse. To try to help him forget about this petttiness, I wrote him, in the mentioned letter at end of last
year, a very friendly invitation, in which I mentioned, that if he could not come himself, that he should let me know his wishes. His answer came
soon. But what an answer it was! In the same, of which you have a copy, I would never have believed that [...] was capable of this. For my good will
and my generous offer, there were sarcastic remarks, lies and misinterpretations. That was too much for me, it almost broke my heart. Since you are a
father of a family, you can more readily understand the feelings and pain that I had to endure, to learn of my child far away having such a married
life. It was actually seven months later, that I received this second report. But what had happened, and what could be done about it? Some firm
action had to be taken, something that could reasure me, for such a situation was more than I could bear. I thought back and forth how I could begin,
but it was useless. I could not think of anything that would bring about the desired result. Then, I took my refuge in prayer. Fervently, I brought my
plea to God about my concern and need for advice. I committed all into His faithful fatherly hands, and asked Him, that He might guide my thoughts and
action, that I would discern His holy will. This is known only to you. After this, I was at peace. It was like all things had already been taken care
of. Two day later, I was working in my field and I thought over the whole matter. All at once, the thought came to me, how would it be if I would turn
to you, Pastor Kilian. I thought this was the right thing to do, for if the ministry of reconciliation could not bring about reconciliation, then
certainly everything else would be in vain. I then went immediately back home, sat down and wrote as rapidly as I could, that which I send to you,
and brought it as soon as it was finished to be mailed. This is the course of the matter, this is no hypocracy, but it is the deeply felt truth.
I realize now, that I could not have found a better way. I am prepared for any interference that might lead to a reconciliation with [...], but not
to any quarrel or strife. I put this matter trustingly into your hands. May the Lord continue to bless your efforts. It would be to my comfort and
consolation till my dying hour, if this marriage problem could be brought to a God-pleasing conclusion.
Since I now know that this matter is in good hands, in regard to my health condition, I will wait for warmer weather before I come over. As soon as
I come, I will try to repay you for your efforts. Till then, I remain wilth all respect,
Your gratitude-indebted Friend,
Carl August Simank

Am Sr. Hochwürden Herrn Pastor Johann Kilian
Serbin Texas.
Nachricht.
Carl August Simank
