Serbin, Lee County, Texas, May 31, 1875
To Professor R. A. Bischoff, Fort Wayne
Dear Professor and Assistant Head Master!
I received your welcome letter in time on May 12. Also the postcard, in which you acknowledged my sending of the $50 for Hermann, is in my hands.
But I was waiting for a letter from Hermann before writing to you. Hermann’s letter came on May 28. Now I can answer your letter, and also write to
Hermann today.
I am much aware about what you wrote about my son. I am greatly concerned about his clear pronunciation, which I will explain to you in the following
way. He is a born Wend and has here had a clear pronunciation of Wendish sentences. But he is not yet very strong in the German language so that he
could build sentences without any problems. There he probably has to search for words when he wants to express a thought in German. That is what he
may not be able to achieve, and so speaks unclearly. It happened to me in the same way in my youth, since I too was a born Wend and first had to learn
German in school. Yes, he should in time, grasp the German language, and then his pronunciation would be better understood.
In regard to the method of sending money, we now prefer the money-order, since the nearby county city of Giddings has become a railroad depot and has
postal service that provides money-orders. But I will not send more than $50 at one time.
In the coming biggest vacation, I would like to have my son Hermann go to a nearby country congregation. Would you be so kind to, in this way,
provide for his accommodations? So first I have to think about his expenses, to make this possible under my poor circumstances. So then, Hermann is
also too young and unwise that he could stay in Cleveland which could now be of great benefit to him. Perhaps he could make such a trip in later
years. So I am therefore, not writing anything to Rev. Wyneken, as I had wanted to do, but put my son entirely in your care for the vacation time.
I am glad that Hermann is not homesick. May God continue to be with my dear son, so that he will continue to progress as he has started to do.
My congregation here has now been with the Synod for 8 years. But I myself personally had been accepted in the same in the year 1855. On May 27, a
delegate from my St. Paul Congregation went to the annual District Synod at Concordia, MO, since the situation in Serbin had become serious. That is
the first time that a delegate from my congregation has gone to Synod.
For now, I wish you the best for your further well being, and I remain in the Lord, with sincere greetings from my wife,
Your Devoted
Johann Kilian, Pastor

An Herrn Professor R. A. Bischoff, Fort Wayne
