Esteemed Readers of the Volksblatt!

Since my last correspondence was rained out, I want to, at this time, submit a few lines, although I don’t have much too write about.

The Christmas holidays were very pleasant. There was good weather, so everyone could enjoy the holidays.

During the holidays, Mr. Traugott Winzer and his family came from Port Arthur to visit their relatives. Also, Mr. Emil Steglich and Gerhard Domaschk from Port Arthur, as well as Miss Hulda Domaschk from Houston, Miss Martha Domaschk from LaGrange and Miss Emma Jurk from Giddings visited their parents during the holidays.

The old year has flown with quick strides, and the new one has come in. Therefore, I want to wish all readers of the Volksblatt, as well as the Volksblatt printing personel, a blessed New Year. I am also sending the following poem for the change of the year:

The new year stands at the door!

What will it bring to me and you?

Will there be war or will there be peace?

The fighters remained armed

To silence them and heal the conflict

Who can lift the _______

Then I thought to myself

It will be well meant, it will be talked about

It will be assembled, debated

It will be loved, hoped, believed

It will be heard, scolded, denied

Endured and _______.

Still come what may

The night will be followed again by the day

With sunshine and rain

Hold on to your old faith

May God not forsake the Germans

And now, “Good luck and blessings!”

Was bringt es Dir, was bringt es mir!

Wird’s Krieg, wird’s Frieden gehen!

Die Rengler bleibet angehillt,

Zu Schweigen sich die aufwufe hüllt.

wer mag den Schieker heben?

Da habe ich bei mir gedacht:

Es wird gemeint, es wird gesacht,

Es wird gesämpst, gestristen;

Es wird geliebt, gehofft, geglaubt,

Es wird gehohrt, geschimpft, getaubt,

Geduldet und gesitken.

Doch komme, was da kommen mag,

Auf Nacht solgt immer wieder Tag,

Und sonnenschein auf Regen:

Am alten Glauben habet heft,

Laß Gott die Deutschen nich verläßt!

Und nun: “Glück auf und Segen!”
